Am I hard of hearing?

I mean I've taken the time to test my own hearing with my audiometer and everything was normal- but I can;t understand quite a few of my students when they come in. They just don't enunciate their speech and when they come in it sounds like quiet mumbling. I mean i can understand the student that walks into a full office and doesn't want to announce something embarassing, but this is a constant and doesn't matter if the office is full or empty.

And while i'm venting - I don't know about the rest of you, and I mean I do have some pretty cool talents like being able to assess temp within +-.2degrees by touching an ear - but mindreading is not one of my skills. I have a lot of students tah just walk into my office and stare at me like I should already know what is bothering them.

OK, now that i've gotten that out - back to my regularly scheduled workday...

Sorry, Purple! I had to laugh when I read this line. It doesn't happen so much here at the Jr High, but when I was at the elem level, I had that all the time. Thought it was just me! hee hee

This is Jr. High! Cripes, the kindergarteners may not have been able to describe what was going on, but at least they'd say something. :rolleyes:

Hi everyone, New to this site and loving it. Finally, a place to vent with someone who "gets it". Re the kids who walk in and stare at you; have you ever just stared back at them to see who would talk first? I know it's not very professional, but once in awhile I just can't help myself!

I get the blank stares too, or I ask them what's up and they just hand me the nurse's pass...I want to hear it from THEIR mouth what is wrong! Sometimes I have to ask several times...or throw out the dreaded "use your words"! Sometimes the student's version of the problem and the teacher's is very different.

Or how about the students who walk in and say... "My stomach" My foot" "My head" I always say, yep you have one... what's the problem? :)

I get a lot of "I don't feel good" - but when I ask how they don't feel good, I get looked at like I've grown two heads.
