Am I hard of hearing?

I mean I've taken the time to test my own hearing with my audiometer and everything was normal- but I can;t understand quite a few of my students when they come in. They just don't enunciate their speech and when they come in it sounds like quiet mumbling. I mean i can understand the student that walks into a full office and doesn't want to announce something embarassing, but this is a constant and doesn't matter if the office is full or empty.

And while i'm venting - I don't know about the rest of you, and I mean I do have some pretty cool talents like being able to assess temp within +-.2degrees by touching an ear - but mindreading is not one of my skills. I have a lot of students tah just walk into my office and stare at me like I should already know what is bothering them.

OK, now that i've gotten that out - back to my regularly scheduled workday...

Hehe...I used to get the I don't feel well almost everyday lol! I would generally give them the big eye'd look full of compassion and concern and say....can you be more specific?? Then they look at me and say...I am sick....so now I just give up with the talk and ask them directly..is it your tummy? Head? throat??? lol! I work in an elementary school K-3 so I know it is hard for them to sometimes realize what is really bothering them...:)

; have you ever just stared back at them to see who would talk first? I know it's not very professional, but once in awhile I just can't help myself!

I admit, I have done this, but I did not last very long. I quickly tired of them staring at me.

This is Jr. High! Cripes, the kindergarteners may not have been able to describe what was going on, but at least they'd say something.

LOL - although many of their responses were totally not what we ask.

Nurse : Where did you hit your head?

Kindergartner: On Joey's mouth.

Nurse: Uh, where did Joey's mouth hit your head?

Kindergartner: Out on the playground.

Nurse: Where does your head hurt.

Kindergartner: My head doesn't hurt. I fell down out.

Gotta love elementary school LOL I swear, some of these kiddos come in and just stand there and have the craziest look on their face....sometimes I almost expect them to mumble "I see dead people" or something equally crazy, they just stand and stare hahahahaha

As far as hearing loss, I actually have moderately bad hearing loss. I had bilateral hearing aids my junior and senior year of high school, because my hearing had gotten so bad (I've since gotten rid of them, but its an issue I'm going to eventually have to face and deal with....my hearing is NOT getting better and Hubby is well aware that I'm just being stubborn lol). Anyways, when I was a senior and had the hearing aids, my (now husband) was in the same group of friends that I hung out with and we all ate lunch together. One day we were sitting at the lunch table and he looked over at me and asked why I wore hearing aids....as serious as I could be, I looked at him and told him "because I can't see!" About a month after that, we started dating. 18 months later, we were married. Almost 6 years later, we're happy as can be. He says that when I looked him straight in the eye and said that, he knew he had to spend the rest of his life with this spunky, sweet, funny girl....and he is :-)
