I have a bit of a dilemma in my mind right now. I am currently in my 2nd semester of prereqs required to apply for the ADN program, a little background first...I am 32 years old, was a very young Mom (16 yo) and married young and raised 4 kids. My oldest is graduating high school next year and my other 3 are right behind. I have wanted to become an RN since I was 17, due to life circumstance i only achieved my CNA back in 1998, my life took a turn and to make a long story short, here i am now able to go back to school.I graduated high school early though, I challenged the equivalency test. but I never formally took chemistry, algebra ,etc so i am now playing catchup on my math classes. Before I can apply to the RN program I have to complete college math (math 1010), as well as a statistics class. well to get to that point I have had to take 2 "remedial" math classes as i never learned algebra. I am in my 2nd remedial math class this coming semester which leaves me to take the math 1010 in summer., at my school you cannot take chemistry until completing math 1010 which will be completed the end of this summer leaving me to be able to take chem in the Fall. My plan was to apply to the program this fall, which I can do as the chem and stats classes will be in progress, which they will acccept. but my concern is the TEAS test. Mainly taking the TEAS test when I have not yet had chemistry. Do you think that is a bad idea?? I could really use some feedback!! I don't know how much chem is on the test, I have had some very basic chem in my biology class, etc. What woulde you all do???? Please help

ThaNKS in advance,

Karla

Hope to be future :nurse:

I am kinda in the same boat. I had my kids early got out of school real fast with only the basic courses.

Now I'm heading back to upgrade a few things. Mainly math.

Myself I would get in all the prereqs first. Maybe hold off another year while you finish up chem. You don't want to be strugling once inrolled in your nursing course.

I think that you should take chem, math and A&P before taking the TEAS. I don't know how your school works, but in mine the teas counts 60 % and the GPA 40 % so it is really important to do well on it. Besides, I've always heard that it is better to finish all the Pre- requisites before getting into nursing school.t Nursing is very difficult and you should focus only on it if you want to do well.

I just bought the Teas V study guide and I don't know a thing. There is Chem, math and stuffs that I hope I'll learn next semester, otherwise I'll be lost. Lol

Besides people say that it is difficult even when they took it after finishing all the pre- requisits, so I wouldn't take it without having all those classes before.

Good Luck!!! And just be patient, rushing you won't make you a better nurse. :)

I would finish the prereqs first and then take the TEAS. My test had a lot of chem on it. I think it's better to take your time and earn the best possible grades/scores. You can do it!

My Chem teacher mentioned several times that former students told him about what concepts were on the TEAS. He's say "Really focus on this -- I hear it is sometimes on the TEAS..."

So, with that being said, I think it is in your best interest to finish all of the pre-req's before you attempt the TEAS. You want to put your very best foot forward, afterall, and score as high as you can.

Finishing strong is more important than finishing fast, in this case.

Good luck! :)

Here's another person to recommend finishing all of your pre-reqs. No, we don't have to take the TEAS but I wouldn't want to be tested on something I didn't have any background on. As far as your age goes, you are very close to being an average age for a nursing student. You are very fortunate that you have teenagers and not babies and toddlers at home. What a blessing to be able to go back to school after working very hard as a mom. Take your time and stay on the schedule that is going to make you successful. I have a mom friend who had a similar young life and had to start at square mom with math, writing and science. She is doing great in nursing school but had to take her time with all of the (pre) pre-requisite classes.

Hello, i see this was posted in 2010, Im surious how this ended up for you? I am new to all nurses.com due to the fact that I am prusuing a Nursing Career myself, My situation mimics yours ALOT, so i am curious what you did and how it all worked out. I had to re take all my basic classes since I received my GED 15 years ago, i forgot alot of things, I know it will take me another year to finish my basics and all my pre reqs b4 i can apply for the Nursing Program, with one year done I am anxious for the next three to be all done and finished :) Let me know if you NOW have any advise for us new comers :)

Hey there, welcome to allnurses...I am now in my 3rd semester, i am done with all my nursing program prereqs accept for physiology which i take in the fall, chemistry which i cannot take until i get through a math 1010 class in the fall, and statistics which comes after the mth 1010 class. I am currently finishing up my english and some general ed stuff...i am looking to apply in the spring for fall 2012 nursing program, which mean i will have to take my entrance test, (they changed it to the kaplan test)by march of 2012. so i will be in the middle of statistics and chem when i take the test.i have heard many many people say the kaplan science part is mainly anatomy and physio. but i am glad i ahve gone back, just sooooo afraid i wont get in, the programs are so competitive. i did not do as well as i hoped in anatomy, i got a C...so i dont know i may have to retake that. its just so different being out of high school this long, and never having had much of the basics in the first place. my advice is if you can take just a couple c;lasses at a time especially with math and sciencess, then do it. i am in a catch 22 because i need to keep 12 units for my financial aid and loans. best of luck to you and email is [email protected] if you ever wanna chat :)

I had high school chemistry (10th grade). If you take chem, and start the basics, then take the TEAS test while you are in chem, I think you will be fine. I never took chem in college for nursing school and the TEAS test was still confusing on the chem part to me.. but I still passed. Get the study guide and really STUDY and KNOW what you are weakest in. But it is possible to pass.
