Took the NLN-Pax-RN / Anatomy I didnt fair so well...should I retake it?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Well I took the Pax-rn in May of this year. I didnt fair as well as I would have hoped. I passed lets just say that. I am applying to the College of Dupage and have heard high scores usually get in over average or somewhat passing. So I am wanting to take it again but dont know if I can put myself through it again. I have almost all the geneds and pre-reqs I need to enter the program just not the high score. What do you guys think should I retake it again? Mind you I also have to wait until December due to a six month waiting period and I am also 5 months pregnant so I will have a new born, along with a 21 month old.

In addition, to that question is this I got a C in my A&PI. I wonder if that will affect me also. ALL my other grades are B's and A's. So I still have a high GPA overall. Should I retake the course too? The two required classes to apply are Chemistry and Anatomy & Physiology ! I am doing very well in Chem so I am thinking Ill be getting an A. So Ill have an A and C as the two required pre-reqs and the low score.

In addition, again because Im pregnant I just cant get up and go to school because most the classes end after I deliver the baby!!!

Help!!!

Someone please chime in!!! I keep going over it again, again, and again trying to figure out what I should do!!! Outsider thoughts would be great.

Which year and semester for nursing are you applying? What exactly were your NLN scores and did you take A&P2 yet?

A C isnt bad in A&PI, but at least a B would be better. If you have the time/money then yes you should retake it. A&P II builds on what you learned in A&PI. Did you buy supplemental books to help you get a better grasp on A&P stuff? Sometimes textbooks arent as clear on information as they could be.

I would probably retake A&P1 and then retake the pax test if the college you are applying to select their applicants based on the pax scores. My school was first come, first serve as long as you have a 3.0 GPA, B in intro to chem, intro to A&P, intro to algebra (or test out). And get a score of 60 or higher on the pax test. Of course that's why we have a 2 year waitlist. Which was okay for me since I wanted to get all the general courses out of the way before I start the nursing classes and clinicals.

If you don't want to retake A&P1, just study on your own during your pregnancy so when you retake the pax test, you will do better on the anatomy part. The pax test I took did not have many anatomy questions. There were many physics questions which I had to guess on since I never took a physics class. Good luck to you.

I will try to answer all the following with my updated information.

I am now 7 months pregnant. Finished Chemistry with an A and my nutrition with an A.

To apply at COD you need:

Chemistry and A&PI

As I wrote got an A in Chem and a C in A&P I.

I have completed all the following required gened courses with the following grades:

A & P II B

Engl 1101 A

Speech 1100 A

Nutrition A

Math A

Micro 1420 B

Psych 2237 B

Humn B

I dont know my exact GPA with the above because most were transfer credits except Chemistry and Humanities. But at COD my GPA for the those two is a 3.11. You need a minimum of a C for courses and a 2.75 gpa to apply.

Here is my shameful PAX-RN scores:

Verbal 38

Science 33

Math 31

Composite 117

So in a nutshell I have the required courses and grades I need to apply. I have all the geneds done. I am only missing the CNA which I can take after I am and if or I am accepted. I also have a bachelors and a masters degree. They give me points for those. So hopefully putting it all out there helps to get a more clearer picture of what I have to offer COD.

I will be applying for the Fall of 2011. Deadline is Feb 1. 2011. The exam dates have not come out yet for testing but I did ask a committee member if they had some in Jan and Dec. She said yes. So I have the opportunity to retest.

Thanks ALL for posting.

So what do you guys think? I have the new test dates and I am really considering doing it again. But all the feedback good and bad would really help!!

You should retake your PAXRN test, for sure. If you have the time and money, do retake the A&P I. Take the CNA in the Spring 2011 semester. Take the 8 week class if it's offered. It's intensive but you get done VERY quickly. Get a PAXRN study guide. It will help a lot. Check your local library for a copy.

I am going to definetely retake the paxrn in december. As far as the a & p, I won't be able to in time for the deadline of feb 1. I was going to take the CNA in the summer due to have 2 small children plus I kinda wanna know that I'm in before taking the time and money.

Thank you for responding

If your posted scores are the percentiles located in the AD column, then yes, you will need to retake the exam since COD requires a minimum percentile of 50 in each of the 3 sections, as well as a composite percentile of 65.

those are not my percentile scores. They are my raw. I'll check to see my percentiles. And get back. I have the mins just not as high as I would like them.

Here are my percentile scores. Dont know why I didnt put those to begin with.

Verbal 57

Math 88

Science 52

Composite 77

Still sad. But I know I am definetely going to do better the next time around.
