Stinks!! giving up my seat to have surgery B4 entering :(

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am so bumbed out, i have chosen to give up my seat this Fall and Spring to have surgery. I was ready to start I went through orientation and had everything set to go-i have an incisional hernia from my c-section years ago-8 to be exact. So i guess i will enter the program very healthy, i can't wait to fit into medium uniforms rather than xl or xxl!!

Some positive things about this but i have to push it down a year!! i have mixed emotions as you can tell. i want to be sad and angry but i can't seem to be??? my weight and my health are so important i procrastinate and struggle with it. I have this motivation now(unwanted) i will never finish school if i choose to fail at this.

Wow i have my work cut out for me, i have to lose at least 80 pounds and i have no insurance so that means i will have to find a way to have surgery before the year is up. Recovery time-meanwhile i will be studying and mastering the my calculation dosages(pharm).

I know a year goes by really quick but still, i'm a little sad, i've waited 5 years already, and i'm in my thirties, another year, ahhhh, i hope i will be okay.

Well wish me luck, i will need it, thanks allnurses' Family :)

jewelspassion {{hugs}} that is a sucky choice to have to make-- I hope you realize (and it sounds like you do) that getting yourself as healthy as possible before you embark on school is non-negotiable. In the hierarchy of needs, if the foundational needs aren't met the rest will fall like a house of cards.

Wishing you all the success you need to accomplish your goals!! Hang in there! :)

Perfectly said!! Happy to know i'm going the right direction!!

Thank You for your encouraging words and for reminding me how appropriate my perspective is about the whole situation.

:)

Better to get the health problems dealt with now, than to wait, and possibly mess up your life to an even greater degree. Good luck with your surgery and hope things go well from here on out.

Since you were already accepted will you automatically be in the program next fall or do you have to start the entire process over again?

I have to have surgery on my neck so I will have to wait to get into nursing to.I have spinal stenosis which makes me hurt all the time.

The college i go to is more than happy to work with me, so i am happy about that! I can defer one time only, so i will have to wait two semesters(1 year ) to start.

At first i was only going to take 1 semester off and start spring(Jan.) but i talked to the director and she thinks i need two semesters off instead of 1. She feels like this is my most crucial decision right now, i could ultimately ruin all my hard work.

So i decided two semesters, not happy, but necessary to make sure i properly recover, six mths might not be enough time to heal and be ready to enter, maybe but i would be taking a huge risk, no room for complications(God forbid) or just recovery, so i took her advice.

At first i was like "okay i will lose the rest of my weight and have surgery and be ready to go!! let's do this!!" but then i began to think, hmmmm possible but too risky since i can only defer once.

So a year should be enough time.

Thanks for asking, nice to talk about it :):)

Happy to hear that! Sounds like you'll be at a good, understandable school and not many people get lucky to attend schools that actually care about their students. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you!

P.S. I also had a hernia (but not incisional) from my first c-section 4 years ago. But then I got pregnant again and it magically disappeared with the 2nd pregnancy. Just wanted to share that to let you know that I know what youre going through...

Hello There,

I am sorry to hear that this is happening to you. You have been so nice and helpful to me and I really appreciate it. I am glad that you are going to defer 1 year so that you can recover and be ready. I am also happy too because I am still on the waitlist and am planning to start next year in the Fall too. So we will probably be in the same class. Remember, yeah it sucks to have to wait but what are you without your health? Take care of you first! It is such a blessing that the Nursing program is willing to work with you. Hey, maybe we can both start studying for the Pharm and Medical dosages. A year will be here tomorrow! I hope you get better and wish you the best for your surgery! I will say a prayer for you. :) Don't give up on Nursing! You will be in and do it!

You are so sweet! Thank You for the encouragement! i need it nowadays. Right now i am taking an art class to complete my general ed(oops forgot the art history Ahis 5, lol) i like 6 weeks instead of 16 weeks, lol. Anyways i most definately will have time to do all that i need including studying. I do want to master pharm that's for sure! Maybe if we get the book we can go back in forth with questions for eachother. It's really crucial to take advantage of this time while we wait, i hope we get in together, that will be neat. Let me know when you get your letter, i won't get a letter up until that time, except for orientation, uggggghh not looking forward to that again:eek:.

Seriously i will be studying after hearing all the drama about pharm and passing it, i don't want to wrestle with it at all, i don't want to figure it out while i have to read 300-500 pgs of nursing fundamentals and write care plans, sounds like a sure way of going crazy while in the program-if we can avoid most,of course not all, of the confusion about pharm we will be more than fine, shhhh our little secret, lol.

Well let's keep in touch, i didn't know it was you! i accepted your FQ most definately. Talk to you soon!:)
