So sad

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

This is my first post here but I really need some encouragement.

I'm a 24 year old student w/o a degree. I decided a year ago that I needed to follow my dream of nursing and just go for it! I'm married and have 2 small children (5 and 3). I work FT (not an option to quit) and am taking 1-2 classes a semester right now until I can start the nursing program. I was hoping for a Fall 2010 entry. By then I would be able to quit working FT, but just right now it isn't an option.

Anyways, I've been working on my pre-reqs and took A&P1 this spring. I studied practically every night, made notes cards, had a study group, etc. But I still got a D. I had a few tests that were really bad, a few that were great, and several that just weren't good. It was a long rough semester and the only class I took. I am HEARTBROKEN. Nursing is all that I've ever wanted to do. And to not even be able to make it through A&P? :sniff: Ugh, I'm so darn mad at myself and embarrassed to be honest. My hubby is extremely supportive and says that he is still proud of me no matter what.

So what do I do? Give up, pick a different career? Try it again? Will that look bad on my transcript that I had to take it twice? Sigh...I'm just at a loss right now and have been in tears all morning. Anything at this point will be helpful.

TIA!

Sorry about the D. However, I would recommend taking a deep breath and signing up again. Good luck.

Don't give up. Pick yourself up, head over to the college, and sign up for the class again. If this is something you really want to do, then you can do it.

I know how hard it is to juggle the kids (I have two myself - 5 years and 8 months), a FT job (yep got one of those too) and classes/studying. People re-take classes all the time to get better grades. I am no expert, but I would think that retaking the class (and acing it - you know you can!) would look better than leaving it at a D. Not to mention, you will be beating yourself up if you give up now.

Go sign up to retake the class in the fall. I am also taking it then and we can help each other Ace the course. Don't give up if this is what you have your heart set on.

(((HUGS)))

Thank you. That's what my heart says I should do. Retake it and bust my butt even harder than before. Let's definitely keep in touch because I do not know ANYONE that has taken this road before or is on it now and I truly feel alone in that aspect.

If anyone else has anything to add, please do so. I could use all the encouragement and words of wisdom I can get!!

YAY!!! We can do this. I don't know anyone on this road either so we can be each others support through all of this.

Where are you going to school?

I agree, take the class over. Before you start though, sit down and think about why you did poorly on the tests. Did you not understand the material? Not enough quality study time? Did the type of studying you did not help you remember your material?

I work FT as well and have a 4 y/o and a husband that might as well be my 2nd child *rolls eyes* so I understand about trying to study and pass classes while you're life goes all crazy around you.

One thing I learned pretty quickly is that I had to reorganzie and prioritize. I had to block out some alone time for studying. This meant studying late at night when Peyton was in bed.

I made flashcards for the class and kept them in my purse. Anytime I was stuck somewhere for a bit (dr's waiting rooms, traffic jam, waiting to pick up Peyton etc) I'd whip them out and study a bit.

I bought a digital voice recorder that allows me to tape my lectures and then download them onto my computer where I can put them on my ipod or on a CD to listen to on my lovely 45 minute one way commute to work.

I know in my A&PII class we had three or four people who were repeating so i'm sure you won't be the only one in your class doing so.

peytonsmom - i think a lot of my problem is study time. i studied 3-4 nights a week, but i can see now that it wasn't near enough. i have a hard time focusing and really sinking in the information. i think i get overwhelmed easily and there were also some personal things going on this semester as well. i know that really isn't an accuse and that i need to toughen up and work harder next time. it's just such a kick in the teeth, ya know?

thank you for the tip to record the lecture. i've seen people do that before, but i think it really would help to hear the information over and over again while studying or driving lol. thank you, i'll look into that!

Ditto.

A&P is a tough course with way too much information and not enough time. It just is what it is. Unfortunately, it is also the basis of most nursing practice. You have to have it. If nursing is your dream, then pursue it wholeheartedly. Sign up for this course again (you've taken it once; that'll certainly help you this time around). Talk with your instructor about how to do better, although I suspect that since you know how s/he teaches, you know his'her expectations. It is difficult, but I think that since you now have a handle on what it entails, you'll do brilliantly.

I sincerely wish you the best of luck and all the success in the world!

Just a thought as I am thinking about the fall semester...I wonder if taking General Biology first would help me to understand some of the basic concepts better so that the harder stuff isn't so hard...I took bio in high school, but not in college (it isn't required to get into the nursing program). What do y'all think?

Yes you might benefit from taking gen bio first. Try to take it online if that's possible and that might help you with logistics. i.e. It will take some of the stress out of commuting from work to campus and also worrying about your kids while you're at it.

A lot of people have to retake courses and schools don't usually hold that against you. Some average the two grades, others will consider the later grade. So if you take it again and get a better grade you should be fine. And - next time you take a course and feel yourself struggling go to your campus learning center and ask for a tutor. It won't cost you anything extra and it can really help.

I can sympathize with you coachswife09. I recently posted myself, not because I failed but have taken my first A&P I class and have my first test coming up and am really freaking out about it. I already know that if I do not do well I will have to retake the class which could possibly have me waiting another year before enrolling in the actual nursing program.

You are young so you still have plently of time which is good. I am 38 if I were your age and had to retake it I wouldn't sweat it.

If this is what you want to do pursue it. I waited and and wish I would have done it much sooner. Good luck to you!!!

A couple thoughts:

1) If you don't take it again then you're done. You're not going to get into nursing school with a D in A&P. Of course you're going to take it again.

2) I wouldn't head right over and sign up to take it again. I would take a semester off and bust your butt in the areas where you struggled and THEN go take it again. You really want an A this time so I'd give yourself every advantage and getting up to speed on areas where you're weak would seem to give you the best chance for that coveted top grade.
