Single mother, no support, nursing school

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I start my BSN program in August. I am a single mother with a 2 year old son, and have been living with my parents for over 2.5 years. I am 31 years old. I have reached a point where it is no longer healthy for me to live at home with my parents. I have to move out with my son and do this alone.

Is there anyone out there (single parent) who has made it through nursing school on their own financially and with limited family support?

Any comments or any offerings of advice are appreciated.

Look into housing programs, foodstamps, welfare...they are offered to help you and if you need help take it. It is possible!! You will be very tired, sleepy, stressed, but in the end it will all be worth it. If you can work while going to school (be careful with your grades) do so, take it day by day. Time management is very important, remember to eat healthy and make time for your baby. You can do it, Good luck!

I am not a parent, so I can't offer too much advice in that area.

You probably already know this, but you need to apply for the FAFSA (free application for federal student aid). This will help the university and the government gauge your financial means. I'm sure that you can get some excellent financial aid money with your given circumstances.

Another thing to ask about is a special needs waiver, which will alert the university that you are financially struggling and will help them better assist you finanically. They will work with you on payments and finding you assistance with your given predicament.

You can also ask to be charged the full cost of attendence (what on-campus students pay total). The university will refund you the difference to pay for your living expenses. Now, of course, this will probably raise your loans that needs to be repayed, but it will get you through school.

Lastly, talk with your appointed advisor. All universities know that students have their own difficulties and the financial aid department is more than happy to work with you!

Best wishes!!!

I know this post is a year old, but I would love to hear how it's going OP...if you see this. I'm a single mom of a 2 year old also thinking about nursing school.

NVM, post is a year old.

I am a single mother of three children and I live with my parents. I am 27 and my children are 16 months, 2 1/2, and 7. I am a full time nursing student. I have a 4.0 Gpa. It is possible and you can do it! It is going to exhausting, but so worth it! Feel free to email me at my personal email. [email protected] I would love to chat.

I am also a mom. I have 4 children. I'm 35 years old. I do, however, have a husband.

I just wanted to say that I admire you. You go girl! You're going to rock it!

I know this post is old but I'm going to reiterate the others, you can do this!

I'm going through a never ending ugly divorce (4.5 years so far), even uglier custody battle, lost 55% of my annual salary almost 9 months ago and raising three girls with my fiancé. Yes, times are hard and I promise once I reach my level of education I'm shooting for I will make it up to my family for all the hours I spend studying rather then playing or the school events I have had to fore go for school. I'm not doing this just for me but for them too! There are times that the stress is overwhelming, the anxiety of questioning myself becomes heavy on top of a chaotic schedule, kids and life in general however I have to remind myself that one at a time.

As for the assistance, there are tons of resources! try the school housing program if they have one or try income based housing. Child care can be through state programs as well as food assistance, utility assistance and insurance for you both while your in school. Churches are a great resource too!

Keep your chin up! your child is looking up to everyday, your Super Woman in their eyes and you got this

I was about your age with 3 children under the age of 9 when I became a single Mom, living in a town with no family. There are so many nurses with stories of struggle and hardship, you'd be amazed.

I've come to believe that, yes, you have to be smart to make it through school, but the make-it-or-break-it characteristic is determination. Determination creates a path and opportunity.

One thought that got me through was that I believed it was the best thing for my children to get an education and support us with a good job. Best wishes.

I'm curious to know how things worked out for you. Being that the post is four years old. And your comment is two years old. I'm not a single mother but I am a married mom with three children and as most moms I take care most of the hands on responsibility for our children, all while pursuing nursing. A testimony is always a great source of encouragement. Thanks
