Scared to death about A&P

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

My A&P class starts May 20th, and I am scared to death. This class is the one that will help me decide if I am going LPN, or if I will go straight to my BSN. I am petrified I will fail, shoot I am even scared about spending the almost $500 on the books alone. I know it can be passed, but man, the counselor at school made me even more nervous. She told me that out of the 60 people that start the class about 20 pass.

Being scared of the class makes it that much harder. Don't be! If this is what you're meant to do, you will find that you actually LIKE A&P!!! I loved it. Yes, it was a hard class. Yes, there was a LOT of memorization. Yes, there was a lot of studying. Yes, more than half the class dropped before the end of the semester. However, those of us remaining really wanted to be there and we really enjoyed it.

Here's a link to my favorite A&P review site. I found the quizzes to be GREAT help when I was studying for my quizzes/test!

It's a VERY interesting course. I'm actually retaking a&p1 this summer because I made a B the first Go around and grad schools like those A's ;) try not to let your nerves block out your ability to learn. If you have a passion for biological sciences and te human body this will come naturally

A&P is fun! I think you'll realize that it isn't so scary once you start. And remember there are other classmates that can help you too! Make friends & efficient study groups and you'll be fine!

You also have to remember that A&P I is technically one of the weed out courses. There are tons of student who don't know what they want to do in life, so why not go for nursing? All my friends are doing it. They see the first step of the process and bail. Stick with it and study as much as you can and you'll do fine.

I found A&P easy because I was interested in it. This is the foundation of everything you want to do in life. It is fascinating and amazing. Texas Politics, on the other hand, it super hard because I couldn't care about the subject any less. (Can you tell what I'm supposed to be doing instead of cruising the boards?)

I loved A&P! (I have a BS in biology. I am currently working on a BSN.. Will graduate May 2014). It turned out to be interesting and honestly wasn't as hard as people made it out to be. More time consuming than difficult. It came natural to me.. And maybe it will to you too! Just make sure you take the time to actually know your A&P.. Really know it and understand it, as opposed to just memorizing it. Having a solid foundation in A&P will pay off when you start taking your actual nursing courses! Trust me! Best of luck!!

Sometimes, counselors and professors use the "scare tactics" for new students in the pre-reqs to see how serious they are about becoming a nurse or whatever it is they are interested in. I went to orientation for nursing school a couple of weeks ago, and one of the professors was talking about accidental needle sticks and blood and guts. She did that to see how many people would be grossed out. That would give her a good idea as to who was serious about nursing school and who wasn't or couldn't handle it. A&P and any class will only be as hard as you allow it to be. You might not always have a good teacher, but you will have to get through the class regardless. What I have found is that students who do not like certain teachers are the ones who are cheaters and got caught or tried to do as little as possible and the professor expected better of them.

If your struggle in a&p then med/surg 1 and 2 will be absolutely brutal. In my opinion those are the two hardest classes in RN school....besides OB( I'm a guy lolol)

What material is or are efficient for lab?

I have gotten lots of A&P materials and I am so positive about it now, can't wait for May the 20th.

Just wandering if there are great materials for A&P 1 lab out there.

I just heard about the "home lab a photo guide for anatomy", is this the best anatomy lab book out there.

I want something I can use to self-study for lab when I am at home.

Thanks in advance.

Just study photos of the models. There's loads of YouTube videos of people going over the lab models. I also found cat dissection vids for muscles to be helpful to study at home, since we had limited time with our cats in lab. This is how I studied for lab and ended up with an A+.

Also, this website is great - has practice lab practicals for every system:

Good luck!!

Don't stress about it now or else the anxiety will get the best of you! The best advice I can give you is make friends right away with one or two people so that you have a study buddy. I had another girl that I met with outside of class at least two times a week. I alway met up with her the night before a test so that we could do some hardcore review.

Having a study partner saved my life! Good luck and don't stress yourself out! A&P is not as scary as people make it out to be.
