Quick Question about GPA

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Alright, real short and sweet:

To be honest, I really screwed around and partied my first couple semesters in college and dropped a couple classes, and got a D my first time around in A&P 1. I have worked furiously to bring my GPA up and it now stands at a 2.6. I'm taking A&P 2 and Chem this semester and Micro in the summer. If I ace these core science classes, will I be OK? Or have I already killed any chances of getting accepted into nursing school?

:uhoh21: I think it all depends on the competitiveness of the schools you are applying for. Do you know how many applicants have applied or how many students your school can accept? What is the schools minimum requirements for GPA? Ours is 2.5. We had just over 400 applicant's apply for about 120 seats. (I was accepted in the first round with a 3.77 GPA)

Does your school offer an academic renewal? I was like you and blew of my classes right after High school, but when I came back (10 yrs later) I wrote a formal letter to my registar asking for academic forgiveness. They erased the entire term that I messed up. I started over with a clean slate.

This could be an option if your having a hard time getting accepted. Good luck and don't give up, where there's a will there is a way! :wink2:

Ours here is 2.5 GPA but with there being at least twice the number of applicants to seats available you practiaclly had to have a 3.0 to get in.

Try looking up a GPA calculator and see how many classes it would take to make the GPA you want. Also, they look at the core classes more closely than the others so it may benifit you to take it over again mabye?

Good luck to you!

Did you take A&P 1 over again? If not, you should definitely do that, since it is a core course for nursing. If you'd gotten a D in say, Computer Applications, that wouldn't be one I'd worry about.

The best thing to do is talk with the nursing dept. chair or secretary. They are the BEST source of information regarding what they look for in applicants. Each college is different, so be sure to talk to all that you apply to. I applied to one school, and had a 3.85 GPA, and didn't get in because my NLN scores were "low average". But another school not only welcomed that GPA, but used my old NLN scores that were much higher than the last ones, and even gave me a transfer scholarship.

I think it's great that you've pulled up you GPA so much and are really working hard! :)

You need to retake your A&P 1. When you retake a class, it overrides the last grade. Your GPA will go up a great deal if you retake it, and make an A! :)

Good luck!!

Thanks for the tip. I'll use an example: I got a C in one of my English classes and attempted to take it over this semester. However the lady at the registry desk told me that I would eventually be kicked out of that class, since I already took it and got a passing grade. Then she told me I couldn't take it again. So I don't know if I could take any of the core classes over again.

Thanks, I finally realized that I had to get serious and hit the books!

I'm going to make an appointment with the nursing dept. chair ASAP. Thanks for filling me in about that- I really didn't know who to talk to.

Thanks- I plan on ACING that class!

They can actually kick you out of a class at your school? That sucks! At my school it's first come, first serve for whoever signs up and pays for classes.

Two years ago I suffered a stillbirth, right before the last week of school no less, finals week. Two of my teachers felt sorry for me and just gave me a B and told me to forget the final (i'd had an A average in all my classes anyway) but my psych teacher extended my final time by a few weeks. I ended up never going and taking that final, it was my own fault, but oh well. SO I took the class over last semester and got an A.

I've already secured my spot for my nursing program, but for the RN-BSN degree I have to go to a university where it's more competitive. I was told that having retaken the psych class will sort of "erase" my class that I got the D in. I guess this is because all they look at are your prereqs and the average you get in them.
