online speech class

  1. Well here it is! I am in my last semester of nursing school and have yet to take intro to speech communications. It is a progam requirement and most of my class took it as a prereq before the program started. The thought of getting up and speaking in front of a group freaks me out SO much, I decided to take it online! I am a very outgoing person in most social settings, but public speaking is something that I just cannot handle! Have any of you taken speech online? If so, what was your experience?? Thanks in advance!!

I know exactly what you mean! I have social anxiety disorder so I typically get freaked out about even being around unfamiliar people...it's even worse when I think about speaking in front of them! I am in my very last semester before nursing school and I'm finally taking Speech online. I may have to end up dropping it and taking it this summer though! I am completely freaking out about the presentations and my teacher has absolutely no compassion whatsoever.

We had a mandatory orientation worth 30 points yesterday and I couldn't make it at the last minute because my husband woke up with a migraine and couldn't take care of our 1 year old. She sends out this email addressed to all those who missed it and recommends that we drop the class immediately. Excuse me? Why in the world would I drop the class because I lost 30 out of 600 points? I have tried emailing her 3 times already this past wek but she refuses to respond to my questions. If this is what I have to look foreward to, I can't do it. It's bad enough without a ****** teacher.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread! I think that taking online classes is great, but I just happened to end up with a really bad teacher.

I waited until my last semester of nursing school to take this required course and decided to take it online as well. We had to perform three speeches...3 mins, 5 mins, and 7 mins...at least one had to be done in person, and the other two you could record with a video camera as long as 10 audience members were visible on the recording (so you could say your speech at home in front of friends and family).

I ended up saying all mine in person, the class was very small due to most people recording their speeches, and most of the students were non traditional (which I personally enjoy...more dedication and maturity usually). I liked it alot and it was not nearly as hard as I thought it was going to be. I did all that worrying for nothing.

I did mine online also with 5 mandatory in class sessions. Because of the limited number of class meetings they were all mandatory to pass. I liked it. The other students were really nice and supportive. We all felt silly at first but it got easier as time went on. An easy A, imo. Best to you, Jules

Excuse me, but isn't the whole point of taking a speech class to improve one's abilities to speak in front of people? I, too, have severe speech giving anxiety, but I'm glad that I took speech as a pre-req. I still have anxiety about giving oral report, but having had a speech class definately is a plus. It's a safe setting in which to improve one's abilities.

Giving report is like giving a little speech. That's why nurses are required to take speech classes.

:yeahthat: I thought the very same thing...how can you possibly learn how to speak and be comfortable in front of others if you take the class online

You still have to say your speech in front of others, but your coursework from the book is done online. At least, that's the way it was done in my program.

And speech is a core requirement to graduate my college, whether you are a nursing major or not. The nursing program had requirements for public speaking assignments for its students as well, that were more in line with the type of public speaking would be required of a nurse. (Community teaching projects, communication excercises, inservices, etc.) So I don't see your point.

Some colleges may not give you credit for such a class

I don't know what kind of college you go to, but if they offer a class, they have to give you credit for it. ALL online classes (at my school, at least) are given the EXACT same credit as if you took it in person.

I took mine through the college I attended, so no credit problems there. Also, the university that I am attending in the fall took the transfer.

The amount of virtual courses increases each year. It's a growing trend among community colleges and universities. You can take college algebra, marriage and family, chemistry, and such online...now that has expanded to include speech. Corporations use teleconferencing and videoconfercing more and more these days. Alot of our training at the hospital is done via videos and online modules, even. It's the age of the internet.

As long as its Speech 101 or Intro to Oral Communication (or whatever gen ed communications class your college is calling it) it should be accepted at most any CC or University as the speech requirement. The hybrid/online class I took has transferred without a problem.
