New Pre Nursing Student

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I just got accepted in school, I am going for orientation Monday morning (June 24 2013) I start August 26th. I wanted to know if anyone could give me some advice before I attend orientation? Also, what is your background story on wanting to become a nurse? I don't have a deep heartthrob story, I just enjoy working with people and helping others, I thought this would be a great job for me.

These things are non negotiables in nursing school. Wherever you got your immunizations as a child should have a record of them. Most clinics will perform a TB skin test for a relatively low cost (hey, school is expensive, no way around certain costs!). Good luck.

I don't have a dr , or dentist, or anything where I could go to a clinic for screenings or vaccines, and I don't have money to just go because the school requires it, so what do I do? :(

Is there a local health department in your area? You can go there for vaccines & it's a lot cheaper than going to a regular doctor's office. That's where I had to go to get mine before I started college.

Yes these are requirements for most nursing programs. Well, maybe not the dental exam. But the physical and the vaccines are. Check with your local health department for the vaccines, they may do physicals as well.

Check with your school (I would start with the financial aid department, then talk with your program adviser / counselor) to see if they have any recommendations or options.

If you go to church, ask to talk with the pastor / priest in private to see if they wouldn't mind taking up a collection to help you out.

Thank you.

If they only require hepatitis B, get the A also. They're working on a cure for C now.

Okay, thanks everyone. I can't speak with anyone until orientation, so I'll talk to them about if when I go. If I do have to pay for the vaccines, what is the price range I'm looking at? Maybe I can do something to earn a little extra cash & pay for the vaccines and it not affect me.

If you bring your student ID to the local health department, some of them may be free. You can call them before going.

The health dept charged 21 for my PPD but I don't know how much the others will cost yet, I am doing them through my regular doctor July 3. Interesting about bringing your student ID to the health dept! Very good option.
