I just got accepted in school, I am going for orientation Monday morning (June 24 2013) I start August 26th. I wanted to know if anyone could give me some advice before I attend orientation? Also, what is your background story on wanting to become a nurse? I don't have a deep heartthrob story, I just enjoy working with people and helping others, I thought this would be a great job for me.

Congrats on your acceptance! I start August 26 also and have NO IDEA when my orientation is yet..... *taps foot impatiently*
You will luckily have plenty of time to get all your things done like vaccinations, background check, drug test, yada yada.... My school did finally list on the bookstore site which books we need so I went ahead and ordered my Fundamentals of Nursing book on half.com. Let us know how orientation goes!

Sleep as much as you can, party like a rock star, load up your Starbucks card, and don't do anything nursing school-related unless you absolutely have to, i.e. start a vaccine series or turn in the paperwork for a background check. Once you start you'll be (figurative) balls to the wall and happy happy fun times will plummet on your list of priorities so take the chance now to goof off before it's time to buckle down and bury your nose in textbooks...

Let me just echo this and add spend time with your friends and family now because you won't have much time to once classes start. And if there are any books you've been wanting to read, now's the time before you don't have time to read anything but textbooks.
I was actually not aware I had to get vaccinations, but does make sense lol.. and how do I find out where the books are that I will need? I haven't been given much insight on everything as you can see lol.. partly the reason I made this account. For more information. I'd like to get ahead and order books also. Oh and by the way, I had to sign up for my orientation, they didn't inform me, I just had to go on the school site and apply, maybe yours is the same?

Thank you for the advice! I've definitely been hearing I'll be needing a lot of sleep, and be studying quite a lot. I'm so nervous for college it's crazy lol.. but I want to succeed so I'm sure my motivation will kick in, along with many cappuccinos to come! Lol
I'm definitely going to be spending time with friends and family! School is going to take a lot out of me, I heard you have to be fully dedicated to the courses and can't miss a day, or you'll miss too much to succeed, and I don't want that. And yes I almost forgot the amounts of reading and homework I'll soon have.. lol. Make a little overwhelming to think about, but I'm sure I'll do fine.. Just nerve racking!
Oh and, how do I add friends on here? lol thanks

Good day, mrskrobbins:
Congratulations on your acceptance; you can do it. Keep a positive attitude.
If you do have a bad day, that energy can be used in a positive way. I was surprised about that from reading In Praise of Bad Moods: 8 Ways a Little Sadness Can Be a Good Thing | Single at Heart
Check if your school has any free to low cost work shops you can attend. The school I'm attending has free workshops covering how to take notes during a lecture, how to study especially for exams, how to manage your time, etc. I took all of the ones they offered.
Per above, do relax, have fun, etc. There's also nothing wrong with getting your mind ready, getting the supplies you need, etc.
https://allnurses.com/pre-nursing-student/recommendations-pre-nursing-834553.html is a thread that goes over questions and answers that I had about school supplies.
https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-student/readings-and-notes-836572.html is a good threat about reading / studying and includes uploads of the handouts and notes I took from related workshops.
There are a lot of solid people at allnurses.com who are very helpful.
Thank you.

Your college probably has a website with a link to the nursing program and that will give you some information about what is required. Some schools are requiring vaccinations, physicals, dental exams, background checks and drug screens before orientation. Mine isn't, but I am at least getting the vaccinations and health screenings done and I had a little dental work to do beforehand so I am getting that done so I will have a good dental form to turn in. As for vaccinations some are in a series so I am getting started on those next week. You are young so you may have all your vaccination records. But you probably didn;t get Hep B, and you will also need your PPD (TB screening, two part screening). You will need your CPR cert for healthcare workers also. That's an all day class, took mine through the Red Cross, about a hundred bucks. The school bookstore website has the books listed per course so I was able to get the ISBNs and look them up on half.com and start ordering them. Lots to do and little time to do it!
I don't have a dr , or dentist, or anything where I could go to a clinic for screenings or vaccines, and I don't have money to just go because the school requires it, so what do I do?
