Midlife students, did your high school every lose your transcripts?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Good day everyone:

I recently applied to nursing school for their R.N. program (associate degree).

The college I went to along with the business school for which I graduated (I have an associate degree in business) both found my transcripts and mailed them off to the nursing school.

My high school is stating they cannot find my transcripts from when I graudated (I did find my high school diploma from 1981).

Have any of you who have gone back to school more than a decade after you graduated ever run into a situtaion where your high school could not locate your transcripts?

If yes, would you mind sharing how you dealt with that situation?

Thank you.

I didn't intend to be "embarrased" ... it was supposed to be a simple smiley

Good day:

FYI, if I get a pm, and don't respond it is due to the rules concerning number of quality points before being able to respond to pm's (this is just an fyi, not a complaint).

I appreciate the responses to date.

Hopefully tomorrow, I will be able to coordinate with the high school and the one college I attended (that has a scan of my HS transcripts) so that the college can release a set to me and to the school.

Thank you.

Yikes! What a pain!! I graduated HS in the mid-90s and had no problem getting mine BUT my school didn't have them. The school board archive department did. I had to send them a dollar LOL (yes, a one dollar bill in the envelope) and they pulled it from microfiche and mailed it off. Crazy that yours doesn't exist anymore! I hope you're able to get it resolved!

And just an aside to the person who said you didn't need to have them - the program I'm applying for DOES require them before you can graduate with the BSN. I have a bachelors and part of a masters, been to a handful of schools, etc, but yep - they need my HS transcripts. Weird, to me, lol but it is on the must have list. :bookworm:

This happened to me as well. The sad thing is I graduated ahead of my class, during the summer the same year as my brother. When I requested my transcript from the records department for the department of education because my high school closed, they were able to find my brother's transcript but not mine. I have the diploma, and even sent them a copy but to no avail. All they said was they could send me a letter neither confirming nor denying my graduating from high school. I was flabbergasted since me and my brother graduated within months of each other. Apparently this happens quite a lot, with the student having to jump through hoops to prove they even went to school.

Good day:

Several people told me it is a requirement of the law for a school district to keep the records; but, I'm not a litigious person, so I'm not sure what that means.

I'm not sure what a "scanned" copy means; but as soon as I'm able to get the HS and college talking to one another, I'm hoping to get a copy in addition to the nursing school getting a copy.

Thank you.

I have heard of schools losing high school transcripts before. In my state, CA, I think it is the board of nursing that requires applicants to show proof of high school graduation. A friend of mine had difficulty obtaining his high school transcripts because his high school, in another state, burned down.

I recommend starting the process of obtaining transcript copies far in advance of applying.

I had a bit of an issue with mine. I graduated in 1988 and my school was nearly destroyed in Hurricane Andrew in 1992. This was before records were computerized in a central database. At the time, the records were only kept on a computer at the school and a paper file was kept at the county. When I went back to school, it took them a few months to be able to locate my high school transcripts because I didn't "exist".

Luckily, I had gone to a community college right after high school and they still had my official high school transcript on file. So, after a bit of back & forth with the school board, they were able to send this information to my high school so they could add me to the system. Nothing like red-tape to make you freak out, eh? :p

I know that for the nursing school I attend, we had to attach a copy of our high school transcripts. I also know that some high schools have lost those transcripts and people have had to work around them. It really is a pain. Glad to hear your college had a scanned copy for you.

When I requested mine, they said, "oh, it's been so long that someone needs to go to the basement and look for them on microfiche."

Yeah, that was a great moment...

Good day:

I wanted to share some good news.

This morning the high school and college (that had a copy of the scanned high school transcripts) where able to coordinate so that the college had permission to send me a copy as well as the nursing school to which I've applied.

I would encourage any going through similar circumstances to persavere, be tenacious, ask questions (even if they appear silly), and to pray.

Thank you everyone for your encouragement and input.
