LPN, what can I do? Grants, Scholarships, or Payment plan

Students Pre-Nursing

Hello beautiful people. Here's my dilemma. I was recently accepted into a LPN program and will be starting this fall. I am so excited and thankful I was accepted!! Anyway, to make a long story short, I obtained an A.A in psychology in 2014. The pell grant I've had is just about out and I was told it won't cover my tuition, etc. for the LPN program. The school does not accept student loans. :sorry: I did find out yesterday that I received a scholarship, but won't receive details regarding how much until next month. In past, the organization has given women a full ride and a mentor. When I did the research, I realized the scholarship is partnered with a few schools and mine is not on the list. When I speak with the organization's leader again, I am going to ask is it possible to use the scholarship at my school. It won't hurt to ask. .. I currently work, but will be leaving my job since it's during the day and I'll be in school during that time. I have children and plenty of living expenses, so I will be working part time as a CNA. I just doubt that will be enough to pay my own tuition and expenses, on top of living expenses. Worse case scenario I'll work full time and do what I have to. I know I've missed the deadline for a lot of scholarships. It's my own fault, but I haven't lost hope. Any suggestions???

WIA funding for LPN eligibility is reduce if she has an associates degree in another discipline. But it doesn't hurt to ask. Some states only do referrals for those on unemployment (quitting a job to go to school is often a disqualifier for unemployment)

Did you ask your financial aid office about other grants, scholarships or a payment plan?

What program are you going to?

Hi jsfarri, after taxes I make 27k. I called WIA yesterday and I was told to come to orientation and see if it can work for me. í ½í¸” I was qualified for it before but at the time I was a single mom and my daughter was 1. I wasn't accepted into nursing school that year and then I started working.

JustBeachyNurse, I did reach out to the financial aid person and she stated I can look online for scholarships. The ones offered from the school, I missed the deadline for. I should've been proactive but wasn't thinking. They do have payment plans. I have to get more details about it. I'm just concerned about working and being able to pay tuition and fees, and living expenses. I also want to be successful as possible in the program.

Smartiipants, I was accepted to Gaston College LPN program for this fall. I have also applied for tuition reimbursement through CHS. It takes 10 business days to process, so I'm waiting to see if I'll get approved for that.

I just looked up Gaston College...it is a reputable community college. I wonder why this school does not accept student loans if it is a public community college.

I believe NC's comm colleges banned student loans. I heard something about it about a year ago. They wanted to cut back on debt. I think that should be the student's decision, especially since we are the ones who sign the documents, etc. It's frustrating because I can receive the loans but the school doesn't accept them. It puts me a tight position. I haven't had much luck finding any other scholarship(s).

OP-If you only 'think' NC banned student loans- you should take yourself to the Financial Aid Office in person and verify. Your future depends on it- hearsay is no way to operate.

I know for a fact GC doesn't accept student loans. I've confirmed it 3 times. I was saying I think because I'm referring to NC as a whole. The Charlotte and surrounding area comm colleges no longer accept student loans. You can pay by grants, scholarships or out of pocket.

The North Carolina Community College System reports 18 of its schools have decided to opt out of the federal student loan program. They fear their colleges could be at risk if many student borrowers default on those loans.

The 18 that opted out are: Alamance Community Collge, Brunswick Community College, Central Carolina Community College, Cleveland Community College, Gaston College, Lenoir Community College, Martin Community College, Mitchell Community College, Montgomery Community College, Pamlico Community College, Randolph Community College, Richmond Community College, Rockingham Community College, Sampson Community College, Sandhills Community College, South Piedmont Community College, Stanly Community College and Surry Community College.
