I am a married mom of 2 and am trying hard to save away money so that I can quit my job this Fall when I enter the program. I am going to try for student loans to help out.

I was wondering what everyone elses plans are.

Hello, married mom of 1 here and I did quit my job when I started nursing school. In fact I had worked full-time at the same job for almost 21 years! So I was really scared to leave, but I am glad I did. Even though I worked full time and did prereqs at night, Nursing school is different. It is a lot of reading (so much information) and sometimes I don't feel like I have enough time even with no work. Some of my classmates do work (part time) and they are struggling to pass. I really want to do more than just pass, but I admire them for their ambition. I also know that reality is that many have to work to pay for college. I set aside money in a 529 for my college while I was knocking out prereqs, but I will say that it took me forever to get through prereqs. as evidenced by me turning 40 in November, but I did it and I got into nursing school and hope to graduate in 2009.

Good luck to you.

I'm still in my prereqs and started saving up. I'm hoping to save enough to help with living costs etc. I may need to apply for financial aid in the end but trying to avoid it if at all possible.

I also made the decision to move onto campus housing.

I was really surprised that they offered campus housing for a community college setting. They have a contract with ASU on their east campus out in Mesa, Arizona. It use to be a military base that has been converted to a ASU campus with housing. So any "military brats" out there know what the housing look like...lol

I'll be moving into a 1 bedroom apt - aka 1 bedroom barrick - but I couldn't beat the price they were offering. The apartment that i have been living in, i've been paying close to 1200 with bills a month and it wasn't allowing me to save enough money for college. I'm able to cut my bills in half by moving onto campus housing....rent: $550...NICE!!! LOL. (this includes - utilities, internet, cable, and phone.) Plus you only have to be taking a minimum of 7 credits per semester - so this helps me as well because i work full time.

Anyway, with the cut in bills, i'll be able to put the amount that i'm use to spending on bills and rent into a savings then hopefully into a cd with higher interest before nursing school starts.

Hello I am a married, mother of one active 4 year old. My last day of working was 1-31-08. Evenhthough I won't start the nursing program in the fall I wanted to have some time to just do things with my son and have more time with my husband. I know that nursing school will be very demanding and time consuming. I am really blessed to be able to quit so early. I have saved some money and have also gotten a student loan so I should be ok until I return to the work force as an RN.

:w00t:

I will be quitting to start my ABSN in May. We are strongly advised not to work and I can't imagine working and finding the time to study, etc. Student and private loans will be my friend....

With my kind of job (supporting women through childbirth) I CAN'T work during school, it would be way too hard! I only plan on working during the 4 months that school is out each year. Luckily, my DH makes enough to support us, while the money I make can be used towards tuition.

Well I have been accepted into a program for the fall of 2008. I plan on quitting my job in August. I have been at the same job for 16 years. I'm scared of leaving my job. I'm currently the insurance holder for my family. I also have a child with medical issues. I'm more worried about paying for high insurance premiums that my husbands plan charges. Nursing will be my second career and I've been out of school for many years. My first degree is in health education and my credits do not transfer due to my degree being older than 10 years old. So I've have used the CLEP tests to test out of Sociology/Psychology. I go to register for classes in two weeks. We are selling my husbands hot rod boat and I'll live off that while finding a part time job while going to school. It is a big decision that I often question myself,"am I doing what is right for me and my family?" I currently have a job in the educational system with summers and holidays off. BUT, I have only had a 1% raise everyother year for the last 9-10 years. So it is time to move on. I pray daily for God to give me a sign that I'm doing the right thing. Is anyone else feeling this way?

Hi, I am a mother of a four year old and will be attending nursing school this fall. Everyone has told me not to work so I am planning on quitting my job. Problem: I have no idea how I can possibly afford to quit. My husband does not make nearly eneough to support us (plus he is not supporting my decision to go to school). I have several months to figure this out. I am thinking about getting a loan.

You bet I feel this way. We will get through it and be darn glad we did, RIGHT?!?!

I left my job abroad for nursing degree. I am only 21 and recent graduate when i enrolled in BSN. In my school (a state university) i have to take the BSN for four years anyway i want to take things slowly but surely.

I'm still working on my pre-reqs, but since I'm still paying off debt from my first Bachelor's degree I figure why not add to it? I plan on quitting my job ithis summer and will be looking into becoming a CNA. The 2 year program here gives points for working in a medical field, so I might as well start. This way I can work part time as a CNA while finishing my pre-reqs and then shift to PCA after my first semester in the program.

That's my plan...but as we all know, even the best plans don't survive first contact with the enemy. ;)

i will work, untill, my major classes starts, my program is 24 months, and 8 of them are pre reqs, and the 4 months after that, are classes that i am very familiar with, therefore them plan is just to mabe stop half way into the program (if i feel that it's necessary ) but i have to push as far as i can (that is why i am reading a whole bunch of a&p and medical terminology now, so when the time comes i am pre-prepared).

and in case i have to quit my job, i will definately have to go for a private loan...
