Is anyone else quitting their job one they enter the nursing program?

Published

I am a married mom of 2 and am trying hard to save away money so that I can quit my job this Fall when I enter the program. I am going to try for student loans to help out.

I was wondering what everyone elses plans are.

I decided a long time ago that I will not work during nursing school. I'm finishing my prereqs right now while working full time and it's killing me. I'll take out student loans and do the best I can to pay them off quickly. There's just no way I could work AND do lectures/clinicals/etc.

Well I will at least be down to one job(full time). Instead of 2 jobs! Cant wait.

I am a single parent of one. I have found a state hospital here that will pay me a 15,000.00 stipenid while I am in nursing school if I sign a 4 year contract. Since I am currently a state employee and want to work for the state anyway, in order to get vested in my retirement plan, I am jumping on this deal. I can always get out of the contract if I don't like it. I will just have to pay the money back. I am also taking out a student loan.

I am fortunate to have a supportive husband and the means to do without my income for a couple of years so I am definitely going to focus 100% on school. I will stop working the end of May to take A&P this summer and will start nursing school late August.

I'm a married mom of 1. I returned to school when my son was 2. I had already quit my job when my son was born, however, due to changes in my husband's job and being permanently laid off half way through school I had to go back to work parttime. I started working 2 weekends (16hrs/wk)a month in my first year & had to increase to 16hrs/wk in my last year(I did an ADN program). I passed with honors, so it is possible to pass without "just passing" & work parttime. Several of my fellow students began working fulltime & dropped to parttime in the last yr.

Just something to keep in mind, as I do not know what types of positions your spouses have, you need to figure out what you would do just in case? We lived on an extremely tight budget for the past 2 years, got my first paycheck & oh so very excited!!

I wish you all the best of luck & success to you all!

My hunny and I just bought our first house together and with 2 kids to take care of, I don't see quitting my job as being a possibility. :uhoh3: Unless I could get some big whopper of a loan to pay for everything, he just can't afford to pay all of our bills by himself.

I'm married, no children. For the past year I've been working on my pre-requisites and am finishing those right now. I'm applying for programs that start between July-September. I started out working full-time (3x 12hr) as a PCT at a hospital 45 minutes from home. When I started A&P and CHM I slowed down to part-time (2x12hr) as a unit secretary/monitor tech. I have now accepted a Pool position (usually 1 shift/week) as a much closer hospital (15 minutes!) and will keep a float position at the other hospital as well (5 shifts every quarter).

However, once I get into the nursing program I'll quit working. I have been saving money and received some financial help from my dad when he sold his house. I should be able to finish nursing school without taking any loans. Our mortgage is enough of a loan as it is!! I'm really excited to spend all my time on school! Can't wait!

Hey there mybrowneyedgirl,

I haven't talked to you in a while! I honestly have no idea what I am going to do. My husband brings it up all the time. I honestly don't think it's possible for us to make it without me working. We'll just have to do what we have to do. It would be nice to get into a hospital so that I had the opportunity to work different shifts but I don't know what the odds of that are. Not to mention the knowledge you would gain just being in that environment. I also have 2 kids:) Saving money right now isn't really even an option:crying2:. If it's meant to be then we'll find a way. I'm just curious if I'll get a call in the fall or if not until winter. I was told winter but people keep telling me that sometimes they'll call you earlier. I just want to be prepared! I have two more classes and I'll have everything done with the exception of the nursing classes, that should help some. Keep your fingers crossed for me and I'll do the same for you!!!

Hi

I just started my 1st of 5 semesters at Adelphi U. I have married w/2 children. I have been at my job for 8 years. It's a difficult decision, but I have to quit once I start Med/Surg in Jan 09. I am saving as much as I can so that I can focus on school for at least 2 semesters. At worst, I will get a p/t job. Being a nurse has been my dream for a long time, but it's not easy to accomplish. Kudos to those who make through. I plan to do the same.

I am planning on quitting my job, and it scares me so much. I have been at my current job for 7 years, and while I don't like it, its more of a comfort, than anything else. I am married and I have a 6 month old, so we are trying to get used to only 1 income. I have been saving my paychecks, and using some to pay off my car before I quit. Such a big step, but I know it will be worth it.
