I have a dilemma

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I have wanted to go to nursing school for ahwile now. Problem is with my previous bachelors degree my GPA is too low. So I have to start at the community college level for an ADN.

Other issue is that my husband is a medical resident. He is done in 2 years and will move to a new state for fellowship. Not enough time to get accepted and finish nursing school here.

Do I just stick it out in retail jobs until we are settled and then pursue nursing?

There is nothing wrong with starting with an ADN. That is what I did. I didn't have any problems getting a job. I am currently finishing my BSN online. With your current situation with your husband, it might be best to look into just taking some general classes or a LPN program. States may vary on what classes they require you to take (and the order you take them) for an ADN, so it could be difficult to start and transfer.

Out of curiosity, why would your low grades make you a more ideal ADN candidate than BSN?

ADN programs are just as competitive as BSN. Any nursing program is.

I've talked with the community college. As long as I get above a 2.6 in the pre Reqs I can be admitted.

What killed me in engineering was the upper level math. Nurses don't take differential equations and calculus. So to your points, yes I am smart and dedicated enough to do nursing school.

Bsn programs rely more heavily on your previous college degree. Not willIng to give me a chance. Even though my HESI is an overall 96.

Any program that would admit people with a GPA of a 2.6 or higher & a passing HESI/PAX/TEAS is a little scary. Is the college nationally accredited? What are their NCLEX scores like? You don't want to go to any school that will accept you then get a bad education.

Yes it is. GPA of most recent coursework. (If your previous degree is not above a 2.6) So the prereqs. Then you have to keep that. Also my Hesi is not JUST passing. A 96 is far above that. Admissions takes people case by case.

Not necessarily true! I had a 2.6 in college before entering nursing school.

I am now one semester from finishing my ADN with a 4.0 (nursing courses and all prerequisites). Cumulative GPA is somewhere around 3.0 now.

My school is accredited, well respected and had one of the highest NCLEX pass rates in the state. And, it'll cost me less than $10,000 total.

I'm not trying to bash you, I'm trying to tell you that you need to look at the big picture. If you don't do your homework, you can get burned from a bad nursing program.

- Is the program nationally accredited?

- What is the program's NCLEX pass rates?

- What do students think of the program?

- Have they ever gotten in trouble with the BON? If so, how did they fix it?

It's columbus state community college. 90% pass.

Accredited. Students love it.

Yes I have done my homework.
