Hello,

I'm in my second year of college. Next year I will go to clinical s and roations at different hospitals. I want to obtain a Masters in Nursing as well. How long should I wait before maintaining a Master's and how do I know for sure which area I want to maintain my Master's in. How did you know that your heart was set in the ER, OR, Anesthetics, or neonatal. How do you know for sure which area to stay in if you enjoy more than one? H E L P!!!

Specializes in ICU.

Unfortunately, in this job market, you know which area is for you because they offer you a job!

Specializes in Pedi.

Once you complete some clinicals you will have a general idea of areas that you'd like and that you'd hate. For me, clinicals just confirmed what I already knew: I liked peds and community based work and I hated maternity, psych and adult health.

I recommend working as a nurse for several years before you enter into a Master's program. In order to be an Advanced Practice Nurse, you need to know what it is to be a nurse. This is the issue I have with the Accelerated MSN programs... how can you be a master in something if you've never been a novice in it?

Work in the areas you think you are interested in and then when you find your niche, go back to grad school.

Depends on the type of masters and why you want it. I think direct entry MHNP makes a lot of sense because they practice in a different way than psych nurses. And you get to switch specialities as you grow. Keep your mind open to what's available and maybe you'll be surprised what you love.

During your clinicals you will see what areas you like or dislike pretty quickly :) Good luck

No, you can't think like that. The only way we are going to fix this problem is stop taking abuse and accepting every job offer they throw at us with "their" desired pay for us. Remember, a bad economy is just a bunch of jive for "corporate greed"
