I didn't mean that you literally had a trust fund, although im sure some do.

My point is that there are those who are much more needier than you. You have a $45k/yr job and ostensibly a previous degree. You probably saved some money - or you should have. And based upon FASFA, you should be able to contribute more than $11k a year for school. This is based upon how much you have in your savings, your checking account, your 401K, and other assets - which I think is a good way to determine how much you should be able to use for school.

There are people who have no savings, who work minimum wage, and who actually have a negative net worth due to the debt they've incurred just from pre-reqs. Bottom line - you're in better shape than many. I hope that these scholarship and others of this kind go to people that are on the edge of dropping out due to no other reason than that they can't afford to go. These are usually people with an EFC of 0 - those who should get this kind of help. Thats all im saying.

See..you're doing what the "system" is doing. I have a $45k job NOW..I won't have that in July..when I start school. And isn't that what the HRSA and FAFSA are for..for when school starts? I have a degree..of which I'm still paying for..$20k. No saved money..as a matter of fact..when I filled out the FAFSA form and asked how much I had in my checking account..I had $210. I have no assets..but I have pleny of bills. In better shape than many..um no.

However..a lot (not all because I'm not going to generalize here) who have EFC's of 0..they are students or wives who aren't work ..and may have kids (which I know is a payless job) but have husbands who are working and supporting them..parents who are working and supporting them. I have no husband taking care of me..no parents letting me live rent free.

I will have NO job in July..I have NO savings..NO one supporting me now or when I'm in school so unless someone on here will be paying for me to live be in health AND go to school..please don't say I'm in better shape than most.

Keep in mind that you'll be taxed a total of 30% when you make an early withdrawal. Think really hard about this. I've done this before and I wasn't too happy with what I NEEDED to give Uncle Sam. This scholarship seems to be geared towards those from two-income families or those living with parents. It's less drama for them I guess. No LPN either! The website implied ONLY RNs. I may be mistaken. Their $1200 stipend certainly won't pay my mortgage and bills. Maybe they would like for me to sell my apartment before they put a lien on it. There are other more "realistic" scholarships out there.

I know..I've actually done it before as well. Just wonderful how they tax you when you take it out..and then tax you AGAIN the next year when you file your taxes. But, I have no choice..it's either that..or..nothing...

Did you meet the first preference meaning undergraduated, fulltime student with efc 0?

yup i did

I am a single mother in nursing school that has a job and supporting myself. I have an EFC of 0. When I filled out my fafsa I had 50 cents in my bank account and I have more bills that I can pay. So as far as I am concerned the 1200 dollars a months stipend is A LOT of money. If you don't think it is and it won't support you then I don't think that this scholarship is meant for you.

i am a single mother as well. i know how hard it is. but heyyy can somebody help me out. i think i will end up having to call anyways. im trying to register so i can fill out the appilcation and it wont let me because it keeps saying my SSN already exists. i dont know what to do.

i think the only thing you CAN do is call. they will look into the reason why it says your SSN already exists.

Again with me being nosy but way back when I used to work for a homestead (yes, an actual homestead, not a savings and loan; I said it was 'way back'!) people would take out what was then called "share loans" against their savings accounts. This froze the account as collateral against the loan and also reduced the interest rate on the loan. Perhaps there is something similar for your 401k so you wouldn't have to pay the tax AND the penalty PLUS have it count against earned income when you cash it out.

The way I keep throwing my :twocents: around, I'm gonna work that EFC down to 0 yet! :lol2:

I hope you do! lol I don't know if it's the same thing..but I can take a loan against my 401(k) but this is the thing..the loan has to be paid back before I leave my job! So, that makes no sense for me. Unless i can roll it over to something else..and then take out a loan. I don't know. But, I'd rather just throw caution to the wind..and cash it out.

Wow, what an awesome opportunity this scholarship is, and unfortunately, I can't even take advantage of it this year. I will have to wait until next year, and who knows if my EFC will still be 0 then. It is this year, but the application period for my school for fall ends MAY 15th!!! I won't even get my acceptance until the end of May, first week of June, so I can't apply.

Good luck to all of you who are can and are applying this year!!

Oops, I realize I said "good luck to all of you who are can", lol. I meant "who can and are." Too late to edit now, but just wanted to correct myself.
