How many hours do you study?

Hi guys,

I'm starting my prerequisites next semester. I have a job offer for 20 hours a week. I'm not sure if I can handle the job and being a full time student and a mother. Also, I've been out of school for 16 years.

How many hours per week did you study for general bio, A&P, English comp, or general psychology? I just want to know the estimated time I have to spend to study and write essays.

This is really going to depend on what type of student you are. I will say that I study a *lot* for A&P - at least an hour or two a day. It's just so much memorization.

English was an easy A for me, but I love reading and writing. My class was fairly paper heavy, but I didn't really have to "study" at all. That class got maybe an hour a week - I can't remember.

Psychology was again, really easy for me. Not much studying as I knew a good chunk of the concepts and it was interesting to me. I spent maybe two hours a week on it. More if there was a test or paper due.

Bio isn't part of my degree oddly enough, so I can't speak to that. Is there a lab with it?

Yes,both general bio and A&p are with labs

I got an A in biology at high school but it was thousand years ago lol

for English the essay writing is my nightmare

even though I got a good grade at the composition part of my placement test, I'm not comfortable with essay writing and it takes 4-5 hours to write a 3 page essay!

I checked rate my professors for my teachers and all of them are fair ones with no crazy homeworks except bio which assign online quizzes and discussions every week.

Where are you planning on going to nursing school?

I've been a full time student at my local community college since this past summer. I have a 2 year old, and 1 year old twins, so there is no way I could really work unless I take a job on the weekends when my husband is off, and then never spend time as a family (yikes). How old are your children? It would be more manageable to work 20hr and be a full time student if your kid(s) went to school/daycare. My babies are all so young and I couldn't afford daycare for three little ones anyway, so they are always home with me haha it's hard, but doable. I'll have all prereqs done this semester with the exception of A&P and Nutrition, which I will take through Straighterline because it transfers to the program I'm planning on attending, so I will save a ton of money and not have to wait however many years to get into my CC nursing program.

I'm going to Valencia college ASN program in Orlando fl

I have a 1 year old.

the job is my previous job which is from 6am to 11am four days a week. She doesn't go to daycare and my husband is not really a help. So I study when she is sleeping or sometimes when she is busy playing with (which doesn't happen much at this age)

good you're almost finished with your prerequisites :up:

I'm good at memorizing; my only concern is the time. I can study about 15-20 hours per week, and I'm not sure if this is enough.

You can work while you do your pre-reqs. I worked 30 hours per week, took up to 6 classes at a time (usually closer to 4 though), maintained a 4.0 GPA and I have 3 kids. I'd say on average, I spent about 20-25 hours on my classes each week, between class time and studying, but again, I was going full time.

Depends on you as the individual. If you can afford to go to school fulltime without a job then I highly suggest that. If not get prereqs done with part time job and than when you get put into nursing school, If you can afford it do that fulltime.

Im fortunate enough to beable to attend school fulltime without having to work. Have two kids and a wife (But using my GI Bill so I get payed as well).

I'm only taking human bio and I study about 3 hours a day for it.

I'm of average intelligence but it takes that long to take really good notes on the chapter. When I do that, I'm able to breeze through the homework and score 100% on all in class quizzes.

I think it seriously depends on the class, the teacher, and your ability to maintain the knowledge. For my classes now, I don't study every day, I study for the biology tests maybe for two days prior and consistently do work and reading, my psych class I already knew most of everything from previous classes so I would review for a few hours before I took the test, government class I don't need to study much because he reviews and it is basically about the professor and his self love, and for history I study for two days prior because her tests and class lectures don't match up. I am maintaining an A in all the classes so far. I have a job interview coming up and next semester I will have 5 classes, 3 of which are sciences so I will probably study every moment I am not working or sleeping LOL.

I got done with all my pre reqs last semester (took me 2 years) I have an overall GPA of 3.8 and a 3.7 on my actual pre recs and a score of 88 on the entrance exam (Test of Essential Academic Skills). I don't consider myself particularly smart since I graduated from high school with a 3.3 and some below average scores on the ACT and SAT. I mention these facts so you can get an idea for the kind of student I am and give you some assurance because sometimes that's all one needs to kick rears. There are a few things you must consider so I'll try to break it down as if I were to give my younger self tips on how to get everything done efficiently.

Plan ahead - what pre-reqs and tests? how long will they take? which classes should be prioritized?

When you have your schedule ready, get all your materials ready EARLY. Get your syllabi printed and

read and highlight through them. Get a nice big calendar, or if you have a mac it has a nice calendar

that is easy to use and it's even color coded so you can get EVERYTHING on it (Tests, quizzes, deadlines

etc.)

I think the key to being a good student and a productive one is to plan everything, and do things ahead of time as well as put in lots of time to study and do hw. falling behind just one day can make the difference between an A and a B. I had straight As until I took physio and got a B. My mistake was that I couldnt find the correct way to study for this class and when I did it wasnt enough to bring my grade back to an A. I attribute this problem to me not asking for enough help and lack of group studying. As far as a specific answer to your question? Well, it depends how competitive you want to be. I wanted to be as competitive as I could be so I studied every second I could, even took pictures of my notes on my phone and took them to work so I could look at them when I could. Being a nursing student is a full time job so as long as you put the time in, you'll yield results. I hope this helps a little. You can do it!

My advice is this study the material before class and right after class. Also I tend to study when my exam day are closer and maybe an hr or two before the exam. Goodluck
