hope to be a lpn, bad at math

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hello everyone feeling upset for some reason I can't pass the math part of the compass. This is really starting to get me down I don't know what it is. I want to start off as an LPN just to make sure my dream of being a Nurse is not just in my head but my heart also. All my life I've wanted to be a NUrse but because of this math I've avoided it. I'm older and want a career that I love, and to be able to make it in this economy. Is there anyone out there with any tips that can help me master this test and my fear of math.

If you have not already done so, enroll in a remedial/developmental math course at your local community college, or if your Compass scores were extremely low, complete the full sequence of remedial math courses. Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts when it comes to learning math. Good luck to you!

You are not alone! Math is not for everyone, but you can master the basics. Avoiding it will not help you anymore. Try doing some math assessments (you can get them at the library) to see what areas in Math you are weak in. Then start studying those areas. There are good resources out there, for free, if you look. Or, do you know anyone good at Math that is willing to tutor you? Maybe 1:1 instruction is more in line with your learning style. I can relate to your math anxiety.

I had to take remedial math courses. It wasn't a big deal. Just sign up for them.

I am completely the same. I am TERRIBLE at math. My entire life I was bad at it and still am. I have to take Intermediate Algebra which is a remedial course in my community college and I can't seem to get in no matter how many times I take the placement test. Intermediate Algebra is the only class I have to take for my associates RN. I can't get passed Beginning Algebra but I am very close to getting into Intermediate (which is the class right after beginning). I would ask your school advisor for some practice tips and papers for math. Study like your life depends on it. Good luck!

what school are you applying for the compass they should have study worksheets at your local college for the compass?

I am in the exact same boat! When I took the entrance exams, I got 110 on reading, 97 on comprehension, and 79 in math, which is way better than I thought! It's important to remind yourself that this isn't easy, but you CAN do this. Try khanacademy.com to practice, it's free and extremely helpful. Make sure to take advantage of every opportunity you can get to get help understanding. Keep trying, and remember you can do this!!
