Fall 2012 Microbiology Students -- STAND UP!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Since we had these threads when I was in A&P I and II, and I thought I'd start one for Microbiology. Anybody else delving into the world of bacteria and viruses this fall? Let's start a support thread! Let's share our victories and failures, exchange study tips, and cheer each other on.

My first lecture and lab classes are tomorrow. I'm looking forward to this class.

We start unknowns this week! :) We do the first unknown guided by our professor and then two unknown sets on our own (well, with our lab partner, thankfully). Time to put all of this studying to work...

We got our unknowns last night! So far I have it narrowed down to a gram positive cocci.

We just finished our last diagnostic tests on Monday. We'll interpret the results tomorrow and then we take our exam next week and start on Unknowns. Looking forward to the Unknowns. Hoping I get some interesting ones.

Our research paper is due next week. I was assigned Bacillus cereus. Since it's not the cause of major life-threatening illness, there isn't much literature out there on it. I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to squeeze out 3 pages on this bacterium. Zzzzz

I guess this is what I have to look forward to next semester! Hang in there you guys are halfway finished.

We have a HUGE lab test tomorrow. Basically, almost any differential test you can think of is going to be on it (IMViC, Urease, DNAse, Sulfide, etc.) We have at least 18 different tests, their components and reactions to memorize for this one. It's easy to get them mixed up. I had to separate them into 2 groups - those that indicate a pH reaction and those that don't. Makes it easier to break it into chunks. Still...it's a lot to get straight. He doesn't make it easy on us. He expects us to know all the chemical reactions and writes out the chemical equation for each one and has us fill in the blanks. I haven't had chemistry in 18 years, so this has been a very tough unit!

Lecture exam is pretty easy this time, though. Just DNA replication and viruses. Not too bad. At least it balances out the tough lab exam. At our school, lab is a separate class from lecture. The lab is only 1 credit hour, whereas lecture is 4 credits. For a 1 credit class, we're doing just about the same amount of work as the 4 credit class!!! He's tough, but he's really good.

5 more weeks to go and we're done....yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Good luck, we go back tonight after school

Being closed because of Sandy for a week.

We have a test that I'm not at all prepared for.

Studying microbial metabolism. Have to do my quiz on this one this week. The stressor is that we also have a quiz on microbial growth and the control of microbial growth along with 3 labs and postings all due by Sunday, then a midterm next Wednesday.:-(

Glad that you came through Sandy in one piece :D I lived in FL during Hurricane Andrew and it was awful. I feel for you! The worst part is all your familiar landmarks (e.g. trees, street signs, etc.) are all gone so it makes you feel disoriented for a while.

Hopefully, your professors will be understanding since everyone just went through a traumatic event :)

Best wishes on your test :D :D :D

Thank you, the test was post pined till Tuesday

I'm so not into this with all the devastation around us, friends still without power.

It's tough

We're in the home stretch! One lab left before our written final (the Tuesday after Thanksgiving), and then we have the following four labs for our unknowns.

As for lecture, we have one more test and the final. December 7th is the official last day of the semester. I can't believe we're so close! Once I finish this class and this semester, it's time for me to start studying for the Kaplan entrance exam.

One more lecture exam exam to go...yay! Started Unknowns in lab today. I was able to guess which bacterium I have for sample A just by the color. The only time we had it was in the very first test at the beginning of the semester. Kind of a give-away...S. marcesens) Won't know until Monday what I've got in sample B. Love solving mysteries, so I'm really liking this project :D
