Do you ever find yourself comparing where you are to where other people are?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

HI ALL,

I have a question for you... Do you ever find yourself comparing yourself to others and where they are in their schooling or their nursing career? I find myself doing that constantly and then telling myself I should have not taken as long as I did to finish my pre-reqs for example. When I graduated high school I began my nursing pre-reqs, mid-way I switched to early childhood and took those classes because I did not think I was smart enough to be a nurse. I always has this burning sensation within me to continue nursing so I switched back and I just found out after taking about 3 years to do pre-reqs I got into my nursing program for Fall 2014. Although I know this is a great thing sometimes I just see where others are and I compare myself to them. Does anyone else ever deal with this issue? I hate that I do this and I should not com are myself but be happy for where I am within my journey.

Comparing yourself to others is a prescription for self-defeat. I recommend you try to break the habit. As said before me, the only competition should be yourself. Put one foot in front of the other, doing the next right thing, and your will achieve your goals!!!!

Never ever compare yourself to others. You are not on their level and they aren't at your level. People who constantly compete/compare get nowhere, trust me on this. I've seen overly competitive people eventually fail, and I'll tell you why: they are too busy focusing on others instead of focusing on themselves.

I'm telling you, take my advice and you'll get far. Best wishes!

Always. But I try to be thankful for the unique relationships and experiences I gained through my struggles, and I don't think I would trade that for anything in this world. Those have shaped who I am, and I wouldn't do anything differently. Everyone goes through life differently, and it is what you make of it.

thank you all so much for the wonderful responses!!! It truly does help seeing all the support form you all;) thank you again and again

I'm so glad I came across this post. I find myself feeling the same way from time to time but I have to remind myself that everyone's situations are different. I graduated high school in '10 so a lot of my peers just received their college degrees, and I won't start my nursing program till June of next year. Focus on the "now" and before you know it, you'll be done too and it will feel amazing :-)

Same here, 2010 HS graduate. I have regrets, but I'm moving on. I start nursing school in August, and I'll be done in 2016.

This is the same situation I am in, except I started when I was 20 with pre-reqs. It's hard because I would have just graduated with my BSN this spring at 21 years old if I would have just figured it out sooner, but I am not going to beat myself up anymore. I'm doing great in my pre-reqs, a lot better than If I had started college fresh out of high school. The experiences I have gained after working in a hospital for a few years are worth being a little behind. In the grand scheme of things, 2 1/2 years off is not that long.

Taking you time with pre-reqs will benefit you, since those courses are important to you nursing education!
