Did you have your doubts?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am a prenursing student. I already have a ba in liberal studies. I am so nervous. I really want to be a nurse. I'm scared though. Will I be able to do it? Will I be able to pass the classes? Study? I am just curious if anyone else had doubts about themselves and are now great nurses.

My concentrations in college were biology, sociology and psychology. Those were the subjects I liked...It wasn't until recently i felt I could tie them all together into nursing. Now its all I can think about!

I felt that way, even going through nursing school. It is scary. There's a lot to learn. But with a lot of determination and a willingness to learn, I bet you can do it. Welcome!

I had dropped out of high school 19 years ago. On my first day of college, I was so terrified I had the runs, but I took my Pepto and showed up for class. I had heard about A&P I, so I had spent 2 weeks before school studying chapter one. Well, our professor spent that first day getting to know us and making us feel more comfortable. When I took my first test two weeks later, he handed me the results (an A) and he smiled at me and said,"You are on your way to becoming a nurse!" I never will forget the confidence that gave me.

You bet I did. I still do at times, but I think most everyone thinks that from time to time.

I did not have doubts. I only had fears of screwing up the first and last pre-req I needed, A&P I. In any case my fear of doing poorly or not being able to compete with kids right out of high school motivated me to study hard. I pulled all A's in that course as well as every co-requisite course from that point on.

So, as the other posters have said, you are not alone in your feelings. Take those feelings and motivate yourself to do well!

By the way, I am similar to you. My work background and first undergraduate degree includes Soc and Psych. I too did well in Biology and past science courses before I started my nursing journey. There are many like us on this board. There are also many student nurses and Registered Nurses with the same background. Good luck.

Thanks everyone. Having a family and going to school full time scares me a little. I know i could do it if I was just a full time student. I hope that they soc and psyc background really help. One of the things I learned in college was that I had empathy for other people. There is of course a debate if empathy is something that can be taught. I was naive enough to think that everyone had empathy for others. Once I learned it wasnt the case...i thought I should use that talent in a field like nursing. Once I really learned about nursing i felt like the career was MADE FOR ME! :)

I had these nervous feelings going from high school to college too. So, I guess its normal for me.
