Attempting to find transferrable courses..

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone!

I'm currently attending a community college trying to finish up as many prereqs as possible before I transfer over to my state university.

I am desperately trying to find equivalents for a few of the classes I have to take. So far I have contacted my school (they're rarely any help with anything at all) and the school I want to transfer to (they haven't gotten back to me yet).

If any of you can give me any help here I would really appreciate it!

The classes I am looking for equivalencies for are:

Cultural Dimensions of Humans and Their Environment (3 credits)

Introduces the richness and uniqueness of the patterns of diverse cultural groups; emphasis is placed on the commonalities and differences among persons of various cultural backgrounds.

Human Interactive Processes (3 credits)

Overview of general communications theory, including components of communication, specific blocks, and selective aspects such as frustration, anxiety, and conflict. Theory applied in a small group situation. Emphasis on development of therapeutic communication.

I read somewhere that both of these classes can be satisfied with some sort of Sociology class, but I've been unable to find which.

I know, it would make more sense for me to post this in the forum for my state, but I never get any responses there and this forum has been extremely helpful to me.

Thanks so much in advance.

Good day, mmcc01:

Your best bet is to contact the state school by phone and ask their registrars office. Have your unofficial transcript handy as well as all of your syllabi.

Thank you.

Thanks so much! :)

Isn't there some kind of web page or hand out that has which courses fulfill which requirements? You might talk to your school and ask for something like this.

It's called an articulation agreement. Should be on the page about transfer credits online for your school.

I did talk to my school about it and they were no help to me at all. I know this post was kind of pointless but I figured I would take a shot, lol.

Actually, no, that's not what I'm looking for. It might be different depending on the school, but at my school articulation agreements are for people who complete a two year degree and then transfer. I'm not looking to get an associates degree. Besides, the state school program is competitive so they don't offer anything like that anyway. It's actually a little complicated because I have to take 24 credits at the state school before transferring into their college of nursing.

Thanks for your post! I'm just going to stop by the school this week.

You don't understand. An articulation agreement is a school agreeing to accept those classes from whatever school they have the agreement with. Basically, communications 101= human interaction.

A lot of college advisors do not explain the processes correctly but SlinkyheadRN is correct, you really need to look at state articulation agreements because you might find yourself in a mess trying to transfer credits from 2 colleges to a university. Articulation agreements also tell you what courses are equivalent for the course you are looking for and also give some alternative choices...this can be quite messy figuring it out.

How I would go about it is first look at the requirements of the University/Schools you are planning to apply to for the RN program and let them help you decide what will transfer and what will not.

For doing this it's best to stick with doing courses only at the public community/state colleges. Also if you are getting financial aid you will have to inform your current school because you won't be able to get financial aid(pell grants) at two school at the same time.

In my opinion, doing this is rather risky and the rushing to complete prerequisites could wind you up in a bigger mess trying to transfer if the transferring institution says no, in addition many pre-nursing students take on too many credit thinking they have it "down packed" then end up with poor grades and never end up getting into the program of their choice because they rushed and messed up their gpa.

The school you want to transfer too may have the courses and equivalent alternatives in their course catalog.

When you transfer what year will you be starting in? Have you tried petitioning your current school for permission to take over the allowed number of credits?...this would be another option instead of going to two colleges.

EDIT:

One idea I could give you is instead of focusing on the one school you hoping to transfer to, look into maybe your top 3 choices see what the differences in prerequisites are and ensure you do them all at your current school, that way you can apply to more than one nursing school and have a better chance of getting in.

You also need to keep in mind that the school will not officially state which credits transfer until you have sent them an official transcript for evaluation.

You can make an appointment with an admissions counselor and bring an unofficial copy of your transcript for them to review with you.

There should be an online tool that you can use to check course numbers you want to transfer in, as long as you're in the same state.

Yeah I did misunderstand, thanks! :) I spoke to the school this week and I've made progress.
