And now we wait!!! - page 2

Well, after a year of studying my backside off and accomplishing a 4.0 GPA, I have finally applied for nursing school. This is my dream, and I have waited a long time to finally have the privilege of... Read More

i'm in my 3rd semester of a two yr. r.n. program and my best advice for anyone not already in the nursing program is...... work or volunteer at a hospital on a medical/surgical floor NOW, so you know exactly what you're getting into.
    You've peaked my curiousity Dijmart.....why?

    You've peaked my curiousity Dijmart.....why?
i worked as an e.r. tech and loved it, so naturally i wanted to be an r.n. so here i am in school for it & let's just say med/surg nursing (req. clinicals) is a polar opposite!
not my cup of tea at all, not saying it won't be yours, because maybe you'll love it?....
    personally i can't stand it. i can't wait to be done w/ med/surg clinicals.....

but while you're in school you will have clinicals on a med/surg floor every week, except for your first semester.
first semester you get to have clinicals in a nursing home.
anyway, i don't want you all to be in "shock" like i was....which can lead to being unsure of your decision to become a nurse, depression, ect.
so, if you volunteer or work as an aid on a med/surg you'll know exactly what nursing school has in store for you!...and yes i'm biting the bullet and continuing in school, but only so i can work in an e.r. or something, because if med/surg was the only type of floor to work on i would quit school right now!

Hey I feel you.. I've been working PRN at a 2nd job as a unit secretary on a med/surg floor so that I can "observe" the nurses.. They have made me think twice about the whole idea.. Since this is the only floor I have ever worked on at a hospital environment, I look forward to other clinicals because right now this is the only view I have of nursing.

    skittlez,
don't think the other "floors" will be much different.....

now, emergency dept. is VERY different for the simple fact that it's drama & trauma (get em' in & get em' out) there isn't the same "routine" like up on the floors. so, naturally they aren't the same, but you have to have a certain "personality type" to be able to deal w/ E.R. in my opinion.

anyway, i think EVERYONE should at least "shadow" an aid for a day or two on various floors before entering nursing school. as a student the aids won't be helping you w/ your patient, you will be doing "TOTAL CARE" so like i said know what your getting into.

Thanks for the words of encouragement all. In response to panzyo3, I have applied to El Centro and Northlake. I know it will not be the end of the world as we know it if I am not accepted, but at my age, there are not that many more years left to complete a career, so I am hoping to get in the first try. Good luck to all of you and let's keep in touch with one another. We are all rooting for each other.

The application deadline for my program was at 5:00pm today, so now the waiting really starts. We're supposed to be notified within 30 days (or so), and I am trying to forget about the whole application process and not dwell on it. Sigh.

My application is in for January 2007 admission and I received a letter that I have been selected to interview. Don't know how many applied to the program, but I did learn that 47 applicants will be interviewed and they will select only 30 for admission. I think I like those numbers!!
My interview is Sept. 25 and the letters go out sometime in October... crossing my fingers and saying my prayers!!
