Anatomy and Physio Pre-Reqs

Good afternoon. I am about to register for BIO-221 (Anatomy and Physiology 1) for the spring term at the Camden County Community College.

The course requires BIO-111 (an Introductory Biology Science) as a pre-req. However, I have not yet taken BIO-111. Instead, currently, I am finishing BIO-121 (Microbiology 1) and Math-029 this fall term.

The CC can allow me to register as a Guest student and complete the course without having met the pre-reqs.

I already have a college degree, completed many many many years ago, and did take some some science courses, including biology during that time.

Question 1: Is this background (taking BIO-121) sufficient preparation for the BIO-221, or would you advice that I go back and take BIO-111?

Question 2: I plan to also take an introductory Chemistry class (010 - Preparation for Chemistry) along with the Anatomy & Physio 1. Is this also a realistic approach? or Should I just concentrate on A & P 1?

Hi,

First, taking chem and A&P 1 together is doable. You know your strengths, so go for it. Both courses have labs (mine do), so it is a lot of studying but if you are organized and know how to prioritize, you should be fine.

Second, I will be taking A&P 1 and 2 soon and I do not have to take any intro biology courses whatsoever. If you are not sure if you should take and intro course, speak to an advisor. She/he should be able to tell you with 100% certainty if you indeed have to take an intro course. In terms of micro, I do believe A&P deals with cellular biology so in that department you may breeze through, but we all know A&P is much more complex than that! Like I said, taking chem and A&P together is manageable. Speak to an advisor to be sure.

It is a pre-req (pre-requirement) which means that you are required​ to take that class before taking Bio 221.

I'm taking chemistry for the first time in my life at 40 and have found it pretty simple as long as your math skills are strong. At my school we have to take Chemistry before A&P though so I didn't have the option to do both.

Honestly,

when I took Intro to Bio (at a different school from where I am taking A/P and my nursing courses soon), the professor wasn't that good and i didn't really learn much. Anatomy is a difficult subject and it contains Anatomy itself plus some biochemistry, but if you know how you learn best, you can survive without the introduction to bio. Just make sure to outline information, keep up with your reading, and make flashacards. For me, that's how I learn. And I have to write everything out, so it sticks in my brain.
