What to review before classes start

What should incoming NP students review/study in the time preceding beginning their formal program? Anything that you weren't prepared for or took you by surprise?

Good question. I have been wondering the same thing. One current student I spoke to said maybe take a patho class, if possible. But other than that to just relax as you will be busy like never before once you start the program.

I asked if I should take an O. Chem class and he stated I should not. This response surprised me. I'm interested in other people's opinions.

I dont think you can honestly prepare to begin classes. I reviewed a book here and there and really, it was a waste. Probably more so for the excitement. There is so much going on in each class and no matter how much you think you already know...you will learn more! So relax while you can:) Good luck on your new adventure!

My program is 2 years full time-including summers. Based on my schedule I would do advanced nursing Ass & nursing research in the summer. That is a lot! I started advanced path in spring 2013, got accepted to NP school in the fall and did 3 classes including advanced pharmacology. Spring 2014, I will do advanced NA so that in the summer I will just have one class.

Do what you can do now before class starts, especially if you will work full time.

That was my plan as well. If I get accepted into a program, I am going to try to take one or two classes( advanced patho) before "officially" starting the program. Because I plan on working through full time as long as I can, taking a class or two a bit early would give me a break or lesser class load later on.

I've read that I'll have to taking a statistics class and a health assessment class before starting the program - the stats class I can swing but anyone know about the other class?

For Simmons some of the students were required to take some refresher courses (can get CEU's this way too) through Western Schools and Universal Class. I have to take a Stats review course as part of my admission conditions (because i only got a C in stats last year), Western Schools has some awesome Assessment self paced courses, and you can get CEU credits for them =)

School is going to be incredibly busy. Take time to relax while you can! But if you want to prep, I'd get a review book and practice doing questions. You'll learn some stuff while getting used to the test questions for both classes and the eventual boards. Also, maybe look over anatomy and pathophysiology. The renin angiotensin aldosterone system is never going to go away!
