Hi!

I'm a new grad as a second career Nurse. I have an interview (my first for an RN job) for an ortho unit this week. I'm going to re-read the ortho chapters in my textbook and look over my lecture notes.

What do you think I could be asked that is ortho specific or even Nursing specific?

THANKS!!!!!

Big things in ortho: pain management and mobility/ambulation

Also with knee and hip replacements there is usually a anticoagulant type of therapy, so you will need to understand how PT/INR levels are read and medication dose adjusted accordingly. What symptoms to look for that may indicate a blood clot may be present and what tests would be needed etc. Pain medication and for God's sake, give them a stool softner/laxative medication the one that seems to work the best for me was Senna-S. The pain med is going to lock up their bowels so great tendency for constipation and you don't want secondary complications from this!!! Learn about how to monitor for compartmentalized syndrome by checking pulses and nerve sensations etc. A good place to start, you will be learning a lot!!!

Ortho is a great place to start in my opinion. The PPs are correct and I don't really have much to add! Just know total hip precautions and precautions to take with total knees. Good Luck!

so how was the interview? did you get the job?

Specializes in orthopedic/trauma, Informatics, diabetes.

? I didn't get a chance to answer-how did it go? Ortho is great

I am also a second degree graduate nurse, interviewing for an ortho position! If you have already done the interview, can you give me an idea of what was asked? Thanks everyone!
