University of Houston 2nd Degree BSN Spring 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi, everyone! I wanted to start a thread for the Spring 2018 application cycle since I didn't see one that was created yet. For those wondering, the deadline is August 15, 2017. Based on last admit's (Spring 2017) thread, applicants started hearing back with denials and acceptances around the second week of September. I look forward to sharing our experiences through this application process!

Does anyone have any insight on the program from any current or previous students? I know it's quite rigorous since it is condensed into 1 year (vs. 15 months at other accelerated second-degree BSN programs).

I have a B.S. in Psychology from UH Main. I'm currently taking my last class for the application (A&P 2 Lab), and I'm planning to take the TEAS in July. Good luck to all!! ;)

Heyy! I've been looking for a thread for UH Spring 2018! I'm so glad I finally found one! I don't know much about the program besides just what I've read on here and that it is pretty competitive! I'm scheduled for my TEAS next Friday the 30th! A bit nervous!

Yay, I'm glad you found this thread! Good luck on the TEAS!! As soon as my book arrives, I'll start studying for it. Hopefully, more people will come by with more insight and information. If not, we'll just see how it goes with our own experiences, enjoy the ride, and just hope for the best! ;)

Hello everyone, I'm excited to find this threat about the UH Spring 2018 accelerated second degree nursing program. I took the teas already and for some reason, I didn't do too well even though the stuff seemed pretty easy to me. I had a 71% overall and thought I did well until I received an email from the school of nursing saying, the required minimum score one needs to be accepted into the program is 75%. From what I know, it is stated on the website that one has to have all necessary documentation submitted to NursingCas and allow a 4-6 weeks window so that the application can be submitted to the respective school of nursing. I called the school of nursing about the school and the advisor told me I had to retake the teas, so I registered the teas again for July 5th. And quick reminder, I didn't have the right study materials when I took the teas the first time, so I also had to buy the right materials from the teas site. Hopefully, I ace it this time because I don't want to ruin my chances of getting into the program. Also, my GPA is pretty good( 3.78), so I'm counting on that to give me a boost too hopefully. Good luck to everyone and more comments welcome please

Hi prospective classmates! So glad I found this thread as I will also be applying to this program. I took the TEAS already, but I suppose I should retake since @goddyboy4real stated that it had to be a 75% to apply O_O. Also I looked at UH's curriculum, it definitely does not look like the traditional ABSN classes. If any alumni could share their experience, that would be great!

So I took my TEAS today and so upset I got an 82 overall but have to retake because I only got a 74.5 in the science section í ½í¸¡í ½í¸¡ And we need a 75 in every section.

Reading Score:

87.2%

Math Score:

90.6%

Science Score:

74.5%

English and Language Usage Score:

75.0%

I'm worried because they say everything needs to be turned into nursing CAS 4-6 weeks before deadline and by the time I retake the exam (I'm looking at 7/10 or 7/12) it will be less than 5 weeks prior!!

Hi @Goddyboy4real! Your exam's today! Hope everything went well! I hate that feeling of thinking you did well, then having to realize that it did not turn out as expected. Your GPA is great, so hopefully that TEAS score will seal the deal for ya!

@trixiehvl Good luck on your next time around!! Hopefully having taken it already gives you an advantage next time. I ran across this video by the college I thought you guys might find insightful. It's a few years old, but it seems like great info and motivation!

@kristennicole017 @Goddyboy4real I WANT to say that when it comes to the TEAS scores, time might not be as much of an issue compared to sending in updated transcripts, etc. Once you have already submitted your NursingCAS app, it looks like you can still upload a PDF of your test scores under the "Documents" tab of the "Program Materials" section. Although it says "You may update the information in this section at any time prior to submission. Once you have submitted, you will not be able to add documents," on the initial screen, once you click on "Upload Documents," it allows you to upload documents, and it also says this: "Provide supporting documentation for your application. You may update the information in this section at any time prior to submission. Once you have submitted, you will be able to add more documents if there are optional document uploads available to you, but you will not be able to replace existing document uploads with new versions or delete uploaded documents."

A little convoluted, but it looks like we can still have our scores updated well ahead of the Aug 15 deadline. Of course, if anyone could contact an admissions rep directly, that would be even better! That would be the sure® way to know! Let me know if y'all hear anything because I have my exam scheduled for July 22nd, and I'm really hoping I won't have to move it up!

Hi @trixiehvl! Nooo! 74.5?! Argh, sooo close! Good luck on your next time around!! Hopefully having taken it already gives you an advantage next time, and you can just focus on science and English and lang usage since those were the only ones that were borderline. I ran across this video by the college I thought you guys might find insightful. It's a few years old, but it seems like great info and motivation! Google search: "Second degree BSN program - A Conversation with Blessy Oommen - YouTube" (since we can't post links on here).

Now, if UH is requiring an OFFICIAL ATI TEAS score report to be sent directly to them from ATI, then that's a whole different story. I have no idea what the turnaround time is for official score reports to be sent to institutions. I am currently under the impression that the PDF upload on NursingCAS is enough. I read something somewhere on their website about it. I will try and give them a call about this as soon as I get the chance. Let me know if anyone has additional info on this!

Alright, sorry for the all the spam, guys! (The moderator ended up approving the web link, so there's double of one of the posts.)

I emailed UH Nursing about the TEAS, and I love that they're so quick at responding. Long story short, you CANNOT upload any more documents to your application once you have submitted it. Even if you do, they won't be able to see what you've uploaded. So if you've already submitted your app without uploading your test scores, you would have to send them a copy of your test scores. You can email your test scores to [email protected] yourself, or you can request ATI to send an official copy for you - EITHER is fine.

I know if you are applying to multiple schools that require the TEAS, only the first transcript is free, any additional is $27, I believe. So the cheaper (and probably quicker) option is for you to email the scores yourself if you've already used up your first free one for another school. With that said, I'll be keeping my test date. Yay! Good luck, everyone!

@nrvhy what email are you writing the UH nursing? I have a question for them!

It looks like I won't be joining y'all in the Spring 2018! I just took my TEAS again and even though I got better grade than before (83 overall) I got a 74.5 again in the science. Good luck to y'all!!

I am a little weary about this program because they would not accept any of my college credits in English Composition. I went to a small private school across the country with a non conventional writing program. I took FOUR composition/oral presentation/research writing classes and had to submit a 50+ page writing portfolio to even graduate but UH will STILL not accept these classes as credit... I think this is because each class is assigned a topic like "Urban Ecology" and not a traditional ENGL prefix. Each class would end with a 15 page research paper and small writing assignments in between. I even sent them a syllabus and a link the the program on the college website.

I did really well on the TEAS (92%) and now my only option is to test out with a CLEP exam. I am honestly considering just forgoing the $30 and letting the application die...
