University of Miami Accelerated BSN spring 2015

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello everyone, I just wanted to start this thread for anyone interesting or planning on applying to UM for spring 2015. I am finishing up the pre-requisites I need...doing micro class and lab. So far those are the only things I know I have to take. I'm extremely nervous, mainly because of the waiting game to see if I'm accepted or not.

I had to take over class, so I am not too happy about that either, so that also makes me a little down.

Also when I called the other day, someone said they are changing the application process, did anyone else hear that information?

Are you guys finish with all your pre-requisites?

Do you know how much repeating a class puts you in the hole for not getting accepted?

I'm wondering the same thing. I have a statistic course from my degree and I also have a level 2 math college course. On the FAQs the also have in brackets that applicants must have a pre-req of at least a college algebra... see below. I am not sure if I need one or the other or both...

  • Chemistry for Life Sciences w/ Lab (CHM 103/105)
(Chemistry for premed or chemistry majors meets this requirement)
  • Human Anatomy w/ Lab (HCS 212/213)
  • Principles of Systemic Physiology (HCS 215)
(Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II meet this requirement)
  • Introduction to Microbiology and Immunology for Nurses (MIC 320)
  • Introduction to Psychology (PSY 110)
  • Introductory Statistics (NUR 202)
(Must have a prerequisite of at least college algebra)
  • Principles of Nutrition (NUR 306)
  • Theories in Growth and Development (NUR 317)
(must cover the lifespan from birth to death)

Usually at Florida universities, you have to have passed college algebra or have tested out of it in order to take introductory statistics. Just check the bulletin for the course you have. It should list the prerequisites somewhere.

I called today they said they would accept a general stats class.. I took STA2023 .. & the course description matches the requirement. So I'm pretty sure they accept 2023, because they didn't specify that they wouldn't when I spoke with an advisor. Assuming they would make it clear that they wouldn't accept certain course codes.. Idk but thanks!

does anyone know when the accepting begins? is it rolling? or after the deadline?

also there is no supplemental application, correct? only nursingcas?

Hi chelypeppr!

This is the first year that they are requiring everything to be sent through NursingCAS. The deadline is November 1st so I definitely would allow 3-5 weeks (at least) for them to process everything, especially since they are going to be reading personal statements and letters of recommendation. I don't think they did rolling admits in the past but so much about their admissions process has changed this year. . . who knows!

Pipmunk,

Thanks for the fast response! Have you heard anything from students previously admitted regarding their gpas? I'm so nervous I just submitted my app and feel like I'm missing info!! This waiting game blows!

chelypeppr,

Everyone I knew who went to Miami were all great students, many of them from top notch undergrad schools. There was a pretty wide range of GPAs represented so don't beat yourself up if you're not a straight-A student! Traditionally, private nursing programs like Miami had much higher admission rates than the public ones. Unfortunately, the top-notch programs are becoming more competitive, especially since Miami has excellent NCLEX pass rates. Too many people want to be nurses and there are only so many slots. Fingers crossed that this isn't a crazy year. I'm always so impressed by the applicants I meet here.

I know, waiting sucks so much. I'm trying to be realistic about the competitiveness of the applicant pool but I can't help it, I want a bright shiny acceptance letter/email!

Pipmunk,

Okay good to know! What's your email address? You seem like you really know what's going on and I would love to chat!

I'm waiting for my private message function to be activated. I hope this happens soon so I can chat with you directly. I'm new to the community but keep showing up in thread! Hopefully more people join and we can talk more. This application cycle has been unusually quiet compared to previous years. . .

When I called the nursing office this week, they said they have not mailed out any decisions yet. It is definitely nerve-racking to wait for a yes or no. Has everyone completed all of the nursing cas information yet? Are most people applying with all of the prerequisites already finished?

Hey gracemiami,

The application window for January entry is open until November. In the past they haven't really done rolling admissions so unfortunately we are all in for a wait. I'm still working on my application.

Chelypeppr,

I sent you you a private message. Let me know if you can read it.

Has anyone gotten an acceptance letter for the spring 2015 accelerated bsn?
