Capscare Academy anyone?

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello. I'm thinking of doing my LPN-RN program at Capscare Academy in FL, anyone doing this program? How is it? Is it a good program? I was told I can take my NCLEX in MD, but it would be under FL NCLEX, then I can "transfer" my license to MD once I pass the NCLEX since it's a compact state? Is this true?

Then contact the MD BON and find out if they will accept a graduate of the program for licensure, whether by exam or by endorsement from another state.

Yes, this is what I've been trying to do before I go further, but I haven't been able to speak to anyone so far. Guess I'll keep trying. Thanks for your input :)

UPDATE!!! I WAS ABLE TO GET IN TOUCH WITH DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION AT MBON AND below is her response:

Let me clarify the Maryland Board of Nursing's regulations. An applicant who attended an out-of-state nursing program can be licensed in MD if the Board of Nursing where the program is located approved that program, i.e., if graduates from your program are allowed to be licensed in FL, MD will honor that approval. Additionally, specific to MD, you must have had both theory and clinical practice in medicine, surgery, maternal-child, psychiatric, pediatric, and geriatric nursing. Often, geriatric nursing is integrated in several of the required nursing areas and will not appear on the official final transcript as a course.

Being able to sit in MD for boards is true. You can sit for the exam in any of the 50 states, a few territories and foreign countries for licensure in a specific state. If FL is your legal state of residency, you cannot test for your license under the MD Board of Nursing. Both MD and FL are compact states meaning you can work in any of the 49 compact states using your FL license. You can test in MD but not for a MD compact license. Once you move to MD, you must endorse into MD.

It takes only a short while poking around online to see that this is a for-profit school that has the cheesy-for-profit-school kind of accreditation that means the courses are unlikely to be transferable to any "real" college or university if (when) you decide to further your education in the future. Also, there's no evidence the nursing program has either ACEN or CCNE accreditation, which means you will be ineligible for employment with healthcare employers that only hire graduates of ACEN- or CCNE-accredited schools. That's a lot of employers. Is it possible to have a long and full career without having attended an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited school? Sure, but you're closing the door on a lot of future professional opportunities before you even get started.

According to the BBB website, the "business management" of the school is four people who all have the same last name. Mom 'n pop nursing school? There are also some complaints about the school on the BBB website.

According to the FL BON website, the school's recent annual NCLEX pass rates are not reassuring: 2015, 54.55%. 2016, 57.14%. For 2017, a whopping 35.85%. (There are no rates for earlier years; did they maybe just start offering the RN program in 2014?) I don't see how this school manages to stay in business, unless Florida just has no standards whatsoever. In any of the states in which I've practiced and taught over the years, a school with NCLEX rates that bad would be in serious trouble with the BON, if not already shut down. Of course, Florida did pass legislation a number of years ago reducing the control the BON has over nursing programs, so maybe that's how they get away with it.

OP, this is not a school I would want to see anyone I knew or cared about get involved with.

Did you read my post above? Completely apart from any of the other concerns, the NCLEX pass rates are shockingly low. They would be out of business in most states or, at least, in serious trouble with the BON. Clearly, they are not doing a good job of preparing their students for the licensure exam, which raises the question of how well they're preparing their students for nursing practice.

Because lets be honest, there are a number of people neither educationally nor intellectually qualified to be nurses but who wont be honest with themselves. So there are a number of private for profit fly by night nursing "schools" willing to steal every penny they can from these people and offer them a completely unsatisfactory nursing education.

Oh, I fully understand that's how the schools stay in business (and even flourish!) from a customer perspective; as I said above, I don't understand how they are allowed to continue operating by the state BON. Most state BONs have standards and schools that were doing that poor a job would be required to either improve their performance or shut down. I'm aware Florida has chosen to, let's say, pursue a different path (), but I'm still amazed that even Florida would allow such a low-performing school to continue operating.

I have a coworker who is enrolled and almost done. Plenty people have passed their NCLEX. Since it's online self study, it takes motivated individual who is focused, otherwise, one may not have such a good experience.

Also look on FB, plenty of folks who attend and speak good things.

I live in NY and I know 2 nurses here that passed and got their RN through this program. If self study isn't for you....PLEASE don't go this route. The NCLEX rates are low and that's something to be Leary of also.

Hello, my coworker attended this school. I believe he took his NCLEX in Florida and I guess its a compact license or endorsement so he can work in Georgia. The school is accredited I am also considering going to this school. People have been attending this school and becoming nurses they just don't talk about it.

Accredited by what organizations? There's nothing about accreditation on their website.
