Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

how doe you cite and reference a website like the one hosted by my state (pa) that provides on-line access to the state codes? the info on the home page seems to be at odds with the apa stylebook excerpt that i'm using (from the purdue owl). the home page states

information included at this site has been derived directly from the pennsylvania code, the commonwealth's official publication of rules and regulations. cite all material in the pennsylvania code by title number and section number.

example: 1 pa. code 17.51.

published and distributed by

fry communications, inc.

in cooperation with the

legislative reference bureau

under the policy supervision and direction of the

joint committee on documents

so my citations from title 28, section 1003.23, sub-section "e" should be something like

(28 pa code, 1003.23[e])

but the apa guide wants a date, so should it really be

(28 pa code (2011), 1003.23[e])?

the reference is even more problematic. should it be something like this

commonwealth of pennsylvania. (2011). pennsylvania code [data file]. retrieved from http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/028/028toc.html ?
do i ignore the publisher and if not, how do i include it in the reference?

Hello Everyone,

Happy New Year! For those in Legal and Ethics assignment, do we have to use our own state's regulations? NY state nursing board website has very little information? I was thinking of using Ohio although I am in NY. Does anyone know if we can be flexible with this?

Thanks

below is the 1st item in the rubic.

accomplished: provides clear, concise summary of standards and clarifies with multiple examples. (4 points)

did you provide examples of the nursing process? assessment, diagnosis, outcomes ......? or did you just provided examples of the standards 9-16? it seems silly to provide examples and then be required to provided specific examples related to personal practice in the next section. ugggg i thought i was done with the paper until i started reading all the posts.

The instructions from my TA stated to use your home state's nursing regs. I would think you'd be OK in using Ohio's, after all, the TA doesn't know what state you're licensed in. There is an advantage to using your own state however: The TA is likely to be very familiar with the Ohio regs and probably not so familiar with others.

chuckster, that's how mine looks. it's one of those unclear references that doesn't fit any of the rules. it bothers me that we have to be so paranoid of such things. as long as it's there why should they ding us?????

Does anybody know what we are to be studying in order to take these quizzes? I got a 40% on the preassessment  lol.....I guessed every one....how embarrassing. I absolutely hate tests and quizzes....it's my downfall!

I just found this blog!! it's great to see others struggling with the same things I am. I am in my 7th nursing course at OU. I have currently taking 330 and 335. I have half of the paper done. I think If I followed the rubic EXACTLY the paper would be 12 pages long. I'm already at 3.5 and I'm half way.

I know what you mean. My paper is definitely going to be more than 4 pages.

I think it will derive from the readings and the lectures. I don't know how I feel about them either-I did not do so well on the pre-assessment either.

I have a questions regarding the first assigment: we have to summarize the standards of practice AND the professional performance standards correct?? At first I thought only the first six but then realized that all 16 need to be covered?!? Also was I the only one thinking that there was just too much to summarize for the Ohio laws and regulations?? I mean there is no way EVERYTHING could be covered in the paper, you have to just choose a couple.

Ugggghh. This is very annoying. Don't see myself in legal nursing in the future...

I posted this question to my TA but have not yet gotten a response:

Hi D_______. I have some additional questions about this week's paper.

The rubric states that we need to summarize the nursing standards of the ANA as well as our state's nurses association and to relate these to our own practices with multiple examples. There are six standards of practice and nine standards of professional performance of the ANA alone. In addition, we are asked to summarize our state's nursing code, again clarified with multiple examples. Finally, we are required to analyze our own practice relative to the law and ethics, also again providing multiple examples. This is a large amount of information to provide in 3 or even 4 double-spaced pages especially when both an introduction and conclusion are required to be included. It really does not seem possible to address all the elements of this assignment within 4 pages, which equates to a maximum of only about 1,300 words.

Questions

1) Is the assumption correct that we need to address all 15 of the standards of practice and professional performance, each with multiple examples to get full marks?

1) Do the introduction and conclusion count against the page limit?

2) Is the page limit firm and will we loose marks if it is exceeded?

I'll post the response when received.

I consistently lost points in my last class over just this kind of thing. Granted, the losses were small but it's maddening that even the APA style guidelines are not clear on things like this (I checked the 5th ed in my local college's library and couldn't find a clear example).

That's a good point chuckster. I already incriminated myself by asking the TA this question and she said I had to use my own state. I actually recall doing a similar assigment in 'Transitions' and I used Ohio Board of nursing without any problems. Anyway I will get on with this assignment by using NY's information. Thanks again for the info.

I just had e-mailed my TA regarding my question of having to address all 16 standards and this is the answer I received:

"Hello,

Summarize any standards that relate to your practice. You may chose a couple laws and summarize how they relate to your practice-is your practice consistent with the laws or does your practice need adjustments or improvements?"
