Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Did you cover both the six ANA standards of nursing practice and the nine standards for professional performance in your paper? I'm having difficulty reconciling any of the ANA standards with the PA nursing code.

Yes I touched on all 16 of them just in case. I also did a "summary" of the PA code since that is what the rubric asked for. I didn't find them very helpful....don't abandon, don't falsify records, yadda, yadda, yadda. This paper can go on and on!!!

Oh good - I Haven't even gotten there yet. Still trying to figure out what in the heck to use to "validate" my practice. Had to add specialty standards .. and will use the fact I am certified in emergency nursing ... but what the heck else? Silly mumbo-jumbo paper as far as I can tell. Can ya tell I am frustrated??? :banghead:

Standards of care are the nursing process - added triage as standard vii. Haven't even started on the professional performance standards yet.

That's what I did. I gave examples of how I assess, diagnose, plan, identify outcomes, implement, and evaluate in the operating room. We also have recommended practices such as sterile technique, patient positioning, safe anesthesia. Does that help?

For those of you concerned that you may have too much - LOL - I am taking Family, Legal/Ethics, Business Com, and Developmental Psych - plus working full time and I have 12 kids LOL

We can do this!!

Legal paper starting tonight :)

The rubric asks for a summary and then mine says analyze your practice in relation to the law and ethics - provide specific examples of how codes and rules related to personal practice - Maine is generic ... nothing is specific. I am still digging....LOL

OK.... wooooow. do I HAVE to do this legal paper?! ugh I'm not ready to start this all up again..

ohhhh .... that paper is so done. DONE

I just found this blog!! it's great to see others struggling with the same things I am. I am in my 7th nursing course at OU. I have currently taking 330 and 335. I have half of the paper done. I think If I followed the rubic EXACTLY the paper would be 12 pages long. I'm already at 3.5 and I'm half way.

I pretty much go straight down the rubric starting with the ANA book. Once I started i had to keep going. The PA Code site was not all that impressive but we only need to "summarize". I still ended up with 4 pages! Hope it's correct . Luckily I didn't hand it in yet.

I always worry that I'm not "doing" the assignment right. I have gotten and A in every course I have taken. I need to remember to relax and just do my best. Once they changed the passing grade to a B I felt more pressure.

I am taking them both together. I have been taking 2 at a time. I am also taking 410 and 405 in Feb. (If my statistics class qualifies)....still fighting that battle.

I feel the same way sometimes. After I complete the assignment I second guess it.......kinda like I am now! lol.

Mine says the same thing. I mentioned some ethical scenarios in relation to the O.R. (hippa, informed consent, etc). Just a brief to-the-point mention. This paper could be much longer if you elaborate. Feels good to be done. Now what? I still need ot do the preassessment. What is it anyway?

pre assessment is a few questions to see how much you know about the topic before you start. It doesn't count in the grade - it is like 5 questions - just DO it :)
