quick scope question

Ok, i'm supposed to buy a "sprague 22" stethoscope with accessories" can someone please tell me what sprague means? And why type of accessories? Sorry if this is a dumb question but i honestly dont know.

Sprague is the brand name of the stethoscope. Not sure that the accessories are that come with it though.

Sprague is a brand you can get for as cheap as fifteen bucks. The accessories, I imagine, are the package you get that includes an extra set of earpieces, and a set of diaphragm rings. I had "the set" for about twenty bucks for the whole shebang and never once used the accessories, LOL.

Just like everyone else said, a sprague is a brand... but do you know if they mean accessories like the extra ear pieces, etc or bp cuff? Is there a certain website or company you are supposed to buy it through? If so look up "sprauge 22" and see what it comes with.

Thanks guys! :) I am buying a cheaper littman (classic II) . Its on sale for $60 yahoo. I didnt feel i wanted the best of the best but didnt want the cheapest either. I thought maybe it was something special i was missing :) You guys rock!

I bought the inexpensive Sprague with accessories for under 20 dollars for my first semester of clinical. Highly disliked it. I ended up having to hunt down a scope from another student to pass my vitals check offs because mine never did line up nicely and the tubing disengaged and I couldn't hear anything on my geriatric patients. Will check for a sale on the Littmann. When it comes to clinicals, it's way worth it to have good equipment instead of looking foolish fishing around for that pulse and can't hear it!

You can recognize a Sprague from a mile away. It his double tubing and the tubing is thick. The accessories might be a pair of bandage scissors, penlight, etc. But could be extra diaphragm and ear tips as others posted. Get the Littmann.

Here's info I found about the accessories:

Accessories included are three different size open bells, two different size replacement diaphragms, and two pairs of eartips in a vinyl storage case. Now available in three colors: Blue, Black, and Green.

(Price 10.84 at quickmedical.com. The 22 refers to the length of the tubing in inches.

Maurice Rappaport and Howard Sprague designed a new stethoscope in the 1940's which became the standard by which other stethoscopes are measured. The Rappaport-Sprague was later made byHewlett-Packard, later Philips, and today there are still cardiologists who consider it to be the finest acoustic stethoscope. Acoustic stethoscopes are familiar to most people, and operate on the transmission of sound from the chestpiece, via air-filled hollow tubes, to the listener's ears. The chestpiece usually consists of two sides that can be placed against the patient for sensing sound — a diaphragm (plastic disc) or bell (hollow cup). If the diaphragm is placed on the patient, body sounds vibrate the diaphragm, creating acoustic pressure waves which travel up the tubing to the listener's ears. If the bell is placed on the patient, the vibrations of the skin directly produce acoustic pressure waves traveling up to the listener's ears. The bell transmits low frequency sounds, while the diaphragm transmits higher frequency sounds. This 2-sided stethoscope was invented by Rappaport and Sprague in the early part of the 20th century. One problem with acoustic stethoscopes is that the sound level is extremely low. They are the most commonly used.

Try this site...this is the type of Sprague our nursing school required with "accessories", i.e., the extra bells and diaphrams.
