Nursing Student Shoes for Talls?

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Published

Hi all,

I'm female, about 6'1" barefoot, and want to find the lowest platform/heel nursing student shoes possible. I also have a high arch and do need support. Can anyone recommend a specific (white) shoe? To make things worse, I wear an 11 or 11 1/2, depending on the shoe.

Danskos and clog-like shoes are just too tall; I ordered some Sketchers GoWalk 2s online, but they are way too devoid of support for my high arches. I need to be on my feet for 10-ish hour clinicals come this fall.

What can I say? I am quite Amazonian. ;)

Thanks very much for any input!

I am also 6'1. I am looking for shoes that would be comfortable. It is somewhat challenging to find scrub pants that are long enough. I have read many different forums about the best shoes. I also do not want shoes that are going to add height. I will continue to research and hopefully find comfortable shoes. I would prefer to have white, leather shoes so they are easy to clean. I currently wear new balance. They do not wipe clean that well.

Hi jax4224,

If I find a great shoe first, I'll let you know. It is frustrating to find shoes that fit properly, right? I just ordered Barco scrubs, btw, with a large top and large tall bottoms. I've got about a 34" inseam and wear about a size 12 women's.

Please keep me posted if you find shoes!

I am 5'9" which is tall enough that I don't like to add extra height either. I also have plantar fasciitis so good arch support is a must for me. I did find a pair of white shoes that I love. Although they add about an inch in height, I found this acceptable considering the excellent support they give me. They are leather, but the tongue has mesh in it. Since the tongue is covered by laces, it doesn't really get dirty. I've also washed them in my washing machine with bleach a couple times and they are still going strong. My shoe size is 10.5, which they carry. They also have 11, and 12, but I don't know about 11.5. Although I bought mine from a shoe store, I did just find them online on a popular site for $61.95 including shipping. Am I allowed to post a link to them here? Or at least state the name of the brand and type?

Try Brooks Addiction. I think they add maybe 1" to overall height. They're not the most fashionable shoes around, but if you're going for comfort, these are your shoes. I found them to have really good arch support also. One pair lasted me through all my clinicals and I still have them in my closet as backup for my Danskos if my feet just need a break.

Thanks, Visionary 123 and OneDuckyRN! I'll have a look at Brooks Addiction and Visionary 123, I'm super curious about what shoes you're talking about. :)

Birkenstocks! I'm almost six feet and don't like shoes with a heel. These are so comfortable and will help you with leg tiredness and back pain. The footbed cradles your heel and distributes the pressure instead of walking on a flat surface which puts the pressure in the center of the heel only. They are really nice.

I have these: ALPRO C100 clog at HappyFeet.com

Or you can get these: Alpro G-500 SG White - 6pm.com

edit: They have great arch support if you have high arches.

Also, these pants are awesome- I bought the regular not the tall, and they're perfect length. If you're 6 feet or taller, the tall would be plenty long enough- I had to send the tall size back and get regular.

Thanks, veggienursenyc. I'm trying for the second pair you mentioned, but 6pm is out of my size (of course!). I just sent an email directly to Birkenstock USA, and hope to hear back soon. I'm wondering if the huge price differences found online means that some are counterfeit(?)

Thanks again.

Nike free runs are also nice, but aren't full leather.

I wonder if the difference in price might indicate something about the quality of the insoles/footbed. I have the first pair, so I can vouch for those. I bought a size 9 womens and I thought I remembered them having double digit sizes.

I am also tall and I wore the Birkenstocks G500 as posted above. They were very comfy throughout nursing school. I also had a pair of the Klogs in the "Naples" style which is a thick sole and I have to say those were more cushy and heaven like when walking in them so I ended up wearing those more often. But, they did add height. However, the Klogs "mission" style is almost just like the Naples, but not as high of a sole. So it would be maybe 1 inch as opposed to 2.5 inches. I haven't tried those but they will probably be the next shoe I buy. If the Klogs mission is still too high for your liking, I'd go with the Birkenstocks cause those are probably as low to the ground as you'll get in a nursing shoe. I got a slightly used pair on eBay. :)
