Best shoes ever?

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Updated:   Published

I've had it. My feet hate me. After another long day in the OR they are ready to sue for divorce.

I need some new shoes!!

This time I'm prepared to spend some money to get a really decent pair of shoes that will be comfortable, supportive, and last. Fashion isn't an issue - I need comfort more than anything.

So... what shoes do you recommend, why, and what is the price range??

Your input is greatly appreciated!!

I LOVE my New Balance 609's. I don't know if they're walking shoes or running shoes, but whichever, they are the most comfortable shoes I"ve ever had on my feet. I've tried Crocs and they didn't have enough arch support for me. I've tried many many different types. I will never buy anything else after my NB. I worked 12 hr shifts, which we've all had turn into 13-14 hr shift, and my feet never hurt afterwards. My last pair cost me around $50.00on sale if I remember correctly.

Those of you that wear Crocs, do you wear the white ones or one of the colors?

I have a couple of pairs of Crocs too. They're very comfy...like wearing slippers. My only complaint is my feet get too hot---even with the holes in them!

I have colored ones.

Crocs are the best! However they don't have the best arch support. So, insert some $5 Dr. Scholl's arch supports in them - and there you have the perfect shoe!

I tried Dansko's and was in terrible pain - no shock absorption - they're like walking on wooden blocks. They're good for taking strain off your lower back, but my knees and calves were always aching. Not cool for $100+ pair of shoes.

Forgive if a dumb question, but do the arch supports fit okay into the Crocs? Wasn't sure if they would hold an insert since they're so wide and they're a clog. I have a very high arch, so the lack of support is the only drawback I've found with the Crocs.

Nike Shox (the full version, not the one that has springs only on the heel part) are absolutely the best shoes I've ever had. They are about $150 though.

(I am ashamed by my typos:)

To my great surprise(I have very sensitive feet) Danskos seem to work for me. The first few shifts were hard until I broke them in, now they feel great. Crocs didnt give me enough support and the sneakers I tried actually felt horrible. Shoes are such a trial and error thing, unfortunately..Some people said the danskos made them twist their ankles but I actually tripped more in the Crocs!

I alternate between my Crocs and my Merrell Primo Breeze shoes. I LOVE both pairs.

I'm with you on Merrell shoes. I've got the Topo Moc model and they are wonderful. I pretty much only wear Merrell these days whether in clinicals or just knocking around (not the same pair, of course). :chuckle

Hello redraccon!

Wow, well my all time favorite, most comfortable nursing shoes in this galaxy are called: Clinics. Used to be sold opposite MACY*S on 34th Street in NYC. Waaaay back in the day. Having a hard time finding anything that resembles them. They were all white, with shoelaces, made of leather, kind of resembled old fashioned nursing shoes. I still have a pair, but they are there to remind me of when I first entered nursing.

The site I bought my shoes from carries Clinics. I nearly bought a pair, but was turned off by the price tag.

That said, I like my NurseMates fine and dandy.

I do find that alternating shoes is key for my feet. Wearing the same pair of shoes everyday all day makes my feet really, really tired. Having two different, but great, pairs of shoes is an awesome strategy IMO.

they call that the 'croc stop'

crocs have the holes in the top of them so you have to be careful of body fluid spills or needles. my hospital actually is not going to allow them anymore
