Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

I hear ya! I was leader for the first 2 and the stress of trying to explain everything and the sound of crickets about killed me. This time I waited for someone else say they would be the leader and I felt so much better. I received a 100% today, but then noticed the instructor's comments were about mumps and not diabetes type 1, so I guess that was the wrong grade. I sent her a message so we will see what the correct grade it.

Yes I bust my but too for that exact reason. Like mentioned earlier though, it seems like no matter how crappy, the CLC always gets and A.

So far there have been 2 posted and both were about My Sister's Keeper. One looks good and the other has no back ground and too much info crammed on the slides. I am posting mine today and I must say it is visually beautiful...lol. I did mine on Away From her because it's about Alzheimer's and I work in neuro. I had never even heard of this movie, but I really enjoyed it. Has anyone else seen it? I am hoping someone else did it as I think it will be interesting to compare thoughts.

I did Away from her as well..mainly because it was a Canadian production, lol And my grandmother had alzheimers as well. Was a very good movie, sad but good!!

What class does the movie diagnosis?

I also picked it when I saw it was directed by Sarah Polley who is an amazing actress in some small independent films. Have you seen her in My Life Without Me? It is the story of a young wife and mother who is diagnosed with terminal cancer. She keeps the diagnosis from her husband and children, and sets about getting her life in order, sometimes in some very shocking ways. The most heartbreaking part is her recording cassettes speaking to her children and giving advice to them as they grow up. It is really sad as well, but amazing. She is a super talented lady with a beautiful heart. I almost asked if I could use that as my movie.

Out of curiosity, was your presentation from Fiona's point of view or Grants? I did mine on grant and my diagnosis was grieving.

I thought the movie character project was awesome. I did Steel Magnolias, which believe it or not I had never seen. I watched it first just to see the movie, then watched it again with my list of 11 FHPs in-hand and a pen to take notes with a nurse's eye”. It was very interesting to see others' projects on the same movie to see how we all saw things a bit differently, or focused on different points of view. It was kind of like real-life in nursing in that it takes a myriad of interdisciplinaries (probably not a word but you get my meaning) to really SEE a patient and be able to care for someone from many different angles in so many areas where they need support. Sure, it was technically about T1DM, but the project opened my eyes to the person behind a disease, what their nonmedical struggles are, and what patients' families go through.

So many things in this program have taught me to view things differently. Healing hospitals, leadership and management, the health of communities, cultural awareness and nursing competence, the responsibilities and obligations I carry simply for choosing this profession, and on and on. As much as I have grumbled at the particulars of any given assignment or focused on the frustration at the individual level, I can honestly say (which I doubted before and sometimes during) that I am a better nurse having had this experience. Patients are multidimensional, as I must be to meet their needs. When I step back and look at my program in its entirety, I have grown; I recognize things, almost automatically, that I either couldn't see before or just didn't see the need for the extra effort. This was a tough sell for me in the beginning, after having been a nurse for >20 years, but now that I'm nearly done? So worth it. And, after perusing other school forums on AN, I'm positive I chose the right program for me

Thank you, Flames. That sounds like a fun assignment!

Flames,

Who did you do your assessment of, Grant or Fiona? Someone just posted one on Fiona, but I choose to do Grant and how he dealt with his with fading away.

I can't recall, that was back in late 2013 when I took that class,lol....I like my breaks!! Probably Fiona.........

Prism,

I agree with everything you said. I watched my movie twice too, taking notes the second time. Glad I am not the only anal one!!! This has been my favorite assignment by far (cause I love good movies) and I am really enjoying everyone's perspective. It is so interesting to see what people pick out and what they missed. I am re-watching Philadelphia again tonight as it has been 20 years since I last saw it. When I am on break I may have to revisit some of the others on the list. I tried to find Mask, but it is impossible unless you buy the DVD. All on the list will be interesting from a nurses point of view.

I did the Elephant Man, he was super interesting. Too bad we did not have a forum to share these beauties. My all time favorite assignment!
