In the U.S., absent a union contract, the company is bound by their own policies only. Do you have an employee handbook, or other access to personnel policies?

I don't have a handbook . where I work the RPNs and all other employees are in a union (just the RNs aren't )They apply a lot of the same policies to the RNs that are set out by the union even though we are not in it .

In Canada we have something called WSIB so I would not be surprised if that type of situation would involve WSIB. I am not in the know about WSIB.

Unfortunately, many Canadian employers look upon staff being assaulted as an occupational hazard.

WCB - Worker's Compensation Board is now known as Workplace Safety and Insurance Board in Ontario. I do believe having your teeth or glasses broken in an assault by a violent patient would be claimable from them as it would be considered a work-related injury, as Fiona59 said. From their website: "In addition to loss of earnings benefits, WSIB benefits pay for a number of costs related to workplace injury and illness, including:

Health care

Prescription drugs

Medical devices and orthotics

Transportation costs associated with work-related injury or illness

In most cases, we pay the health care provider directly. Your case manager, together with your nurse consultant, will advise you on how to claim for these benefits and how each benefit is paid."

I am in Ontario .

Does Ontario not have workman's comp insurance to cover your injuries? As far as your glasses goes I would think your employer would pay for that as long as you were following protocols for handling combattive patients.
