Hi

I am currently on maternity leave. I was wondering if it is allowed or possible to apply for another nursing job while on maternity leave, and resign from my current job. I will give two weeks notice, but do I have to work the two weeks or just informing my employer in advance that I am leaving, adequate?

It probably depends if you are getting a paid maternity leave or STD. Several coworkers of mine have left after maternity leave. They had to work a specific amount of time after maternity leave, since it was paid leave. I am not sure exactly how many days or weeks they had to work. I would ask the HR department.

Forgot to mention im from alberta, canada,

im on maternity EI leave

moved to Canadian nursing for best response.

How close to the end of your leave are you? Are you taking the full year?

If you are employed by AHS, you have the right to return to a position the same fte as the one you left. It doesn't have to be the same position but it will be on the same service and same number of hours per pay period.

I'd make very certain that the new job is a perfect fit because going back might be very difficult if it's a poor fit.

I've done this as internal transfer. Like the above poster said, make sure its a good fit. Even though there is no "discrimination," against doing this, you don't want to burn bridges. Even though this is a normal process of life, management expects you to come back (at least from my expereince.) I'd wait to come back and start the search, but if its the perfect job, then go for it.
