Nursing habits

Nurses Humor

Published

At work, we carry our work phones. they basically look like cell phones but can only make calls within the hospital. They also can get calls from outside the hospital so if families want to contact the nurse we can just give them our direct number. So when we get calls from Families, PT, Doctors, Central monitoring, basically everything they just call our direct line instead of going through the HUC and the main line at the desk. Super nice, cause we have a phone with us ALL the time.

So....everytime i answer my work phone i say "Cardiology this is Jenni, RN"

My habit? I answer my personal cell phone and home phone like this. Today my fiance's coworker called our house phone, which NEVER rings. i answer it "Cardiology this is Jenni, RN" all i hear is "uh...................Is this Cory's number?"...oops :)

Anyone else find them self having habits like this at home?

my husband tells me he often wakes up in middle of night and I have fingers on his wrist taking his pulse in my sleep.....I also tend to ask people in social settings when their last bowel movement was if they mention abdominal pain.....

Hehe I do this too. And the "how much have you had to drink today" if one of my kids complain of a headache. My husband jokes that all the families ills and ailments can be cured by a BM and a glass of water.

I knock on doors where ever I go, sometimes when I am coming out of a room!

...it's not a joke if it's true!!!

I will stand in line at the grocery store, shopping center.... and check out peoples veins on their arms and think to myself "wow, thats a nice fat one"!!!

Whenever I see an elderly person ambulating in public, I have a strange urge to put my gait belt on him/her and help them along.

:smokin:

I have a habit of making eye contact with complete strangers smiling and saying "Hi, how are you doing?"

When I first got out of school, I'd hear those IV alarms in my sleep and wake up to find myself across the room trying to silence the alarm..on the tv. I also would be driving home and hear imaginary alarms...

I check out the veins in the grocery store line all of time....my fingers start twitching to start that IV.

I always begin to sign the RN after my name on a check....I really feel stupid about that.

Now that I do case management, I repeat our fax number literally 30-40 times a day...I catch myself giving that number out as my personal home phone number. I have no idea how many times I didn't stop and correct that.

And after 4 years of being out of PICU, I still hear those monitors going off in my sleep occasionally.

I don't mind that, It's nostalgic:)

I wake up at 0400 to get myself centered and AWAKE prior to going to work. My hubby is accustomed to my moving about in the morning, and actually likes it. He told me that it helps him acclimate to the morning, and gets him going earlier than he used to. Even so, I am very conscientious about noise and try to keep as quiet as possible. I always close the door to the bathroom leading into the master bedroom when I am getting ready for work in the morning.

One foggy morning, I finished showering, and was leaving the bathroom to go to the bedroom in order to dress for the day. I KNOCKED ON THE DOOR to the bedroom as I was leaving the bathroom! My witty husband, half asleep but somehow with full awareness replies, "I don't want what you are selling unless you are naked." Full mental palm slap to the forehead while in awe of this funny man that I married!

We had a good start to the day that morning!

Using a paper towel to turn off the water.

Years ago I was well beyond the legal limit, went to the bathroom...and had the girl next to me at the sink look at me and go "Nurse?" I went "...um...yeah..." She observed that no matter how tired or inebriated, all nurses turn the water off with a paper towel. She was right.

Shoot, I do this now and I'm not even a nurse yet! :lol2:

My fam is always teasing me, saying I'm ocd b/c I use hand sanitizer on buggy handles, etc. My mom was teasing me one day saying 'i don't know how she'll be a nurse and deal with the germs, she's constantly rubbing her hands w/ that stuff'. My aunt who is a nurse had my back. Her reply was "Good! She'll fit right in!" :)

at work when i am running for a bed alarm, staff emergency, code bell etc i grab my stethoscope (that i keep around my neck) to keep it from falling off and swinging around. I have caught myself reaching for my stethoscope when walking quickly/ running outside of work.

Im also guilty of walking out of a room and putting my hand out for the purell dispenser.

I've gotten rid of alarm clocks because they sound too much like the IV pumps at work. I get nervous in crowded areas when around sickly people who have difficulty breathing after climbing stairs (kids are in theater, so I attend a lot of plays, and it's amazing how many people can't climb stairs without puffing).

When holding DH hand, I idly palpate for veins, until he gets disgusted and yells "I'm not a patient!". I carry purell in my purse at all times.

Our local Hobby Lobby uses colors for their overhead codes. I jump every time they call Code Blue.
