Shakespearean Sonnets are poems typically written using the same structure as Shakespeare's. They are almost always composed of three quatrains, or four line stanzas, as well as a final couplet. The lines are often written in iambic pentameter, a rhythm that is often used in English literature and poetry.

In addition to the general structure of the poems, most Shakespearean Sonnets address issues of love, beauty and mortality. As such, many of these poems address romantic interests and the intense life experiences of their authors.

As an eighth grader, and an aspiring poet, I often tried to write poetry that could live up to the greats. I wrote a number of Shakespearean Sonnets. I perfected iambic pentameter as well as the specific rhyme scheme. However, as a young and inexperienced thirteen year old, the content of my sonnets left much to be desired.

For example, I was quite proud of my Shakespearean Sonnet entitled "Come One, Come All" that discussed the circus. I had another one that I wrote about my graduation trip.

As I matured, I learned that these poems were in the form of a Shakespearean Sonnet, but contained inappropriate content. I also realized that I probably could not support myself on poetry alone, and as such pursued other professional interests.

Now that I am a nurse (and still an avid writer), I feel that I have had the life experiences that are needed to write a truly meaningfully Shakespearean Sonnet. As such, I would like to take the opportunity to once and for all declare my devotion to the love of my life.

Morning and Night

Wake up in the morn

I need you right now

Although it's just dawn

I crave you and how

A dark roast or light

Both can fill my need

My morning delight

I'll down you with greed

The smell is so strong

The taste oh so thick

To linger for long

The pick me up trick

Finish a cup, heat another pot

Just one cup? Oh I think not.

So there you have it. I have recognized the love in my life. I cannot do without you, my dear coffee. I will spend hours with you as I savor your taste and smell. I love your many variations. I cherish my lattes, my espressos, my cappuccinos, and my Frappuccino's. I crave our next meeting. I will find and seek you out wherever I may be because I cannot be without you.

I am changing my relationship status to "in love".

Don't you see how nursing has changed my life as a writer?

How it increased my depth, improved my ability to write from the heart. My writing is so improved. I can't believe that I used to write about circuses and trips. Ah, now I have something of substance. I can write from my heart. I can quit nursing. In fact, I can dedicate the rest of my life to my relationship with my most beloved, my most needed, the love of my life...
