Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hey all,

i just graduated nursing school from a 2nd degree nursing program in september. i am currently studying for my NCLEX,and i will be taking it towards the end of November. I plan on getting a job in any of the ICUs department of NYU in NYC. I was wondering if there is anyone out there who may be able to help get a job at the ICU in NYU. I really would appreciate any help/suggestions.

thank you

I sincerely wish you luck finding the job of your choice. However, I hope you are aware that in many areas, and I would expect NYC to be one of them, there are many schools churning out new grad nurses faster than positions are opening up. You may find you need to apply to many facilities and many different units to get that first job. If that's the case, at least you wil. Have nursing experience and possibly access to internal applicant job postings down the line.

Well, that's pretty ambitious. You plan on working in the ICU of NYU right out of school, do you?

Do they offer a new grad residency program? Have you gone to their web site and researched programs they offer for new grads? Do you have experience in ICU as a nurse tech? Do you know anyone in a position to help you at NYU? Have your instructors at your school offered you any advice about getting a job there? If NYU is anything like the large, respected hospitals in my city, they have already hired their ICU new grad candidates, typically starting every year in August.

I attended one of the top 10 nursing schools in the country with my BSN and a GPA of 3.7 and 2 years volunteer experience prior at the hospital I am now employed at (med/surg unit) and I can tell you that it is extremely difficult to get a job in NYC as a new grad, let alone an ICU. There ARE people who do get into ICUs but the amount of positions open are very few and some hospitals dont even hire new grads for ICU positions. It took me 5 months to finally get a job (I was one of the lucky few), an interview even, and I've applied to around 300 openings for all the larger hospitals in the NYC area (NYU, Mount Sinai, NYP, MSK, HSS, NSLIJ). It might've been my fault that I was selective and not open to looking at HHC hospitals or LTC/nursing homes though.

I am not trying to discourage you, by all means go for it, but im letting you know the reality of the job market in NYC.

hey thanks for your response/insight. however gloom it may sound, i certainly appreciate your experience and reality as it pertains to the job market in NYC. i had no clue that the job market in NYC was that tough with respect to nursing anyway. but i will keep looking and hope for the best.
