RNs playing as nurses in movies/modeling

Nurses Career Support

Published

I am a registered nurse and want to explore the idea of being cast on the set of a movie or a show playing a nurse, and also have thought about trying to model scrubs for a company. I heard of nurses going this but don't know where to start. Has anyone had experience with this? Any thoughts/advice will be much appreciated.

I don't think it's very lucrative, except for "Code Black".I read they use real nurses in addition to the actors....The models in the scrub catalogues and web sites are just that....Models.(useless trivia,Scott Weiland, former lead singer of Stone Temple Pilot-his ex-wife,Mary made her modeling come-back in a scrubs catalogue.Read her biography, highly recommend)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is a real-life OR nurse that has been on Grey's Anatomy for years, and also still works in the hospital

somewhere. She has developed a bit of a cult following for only having a few lines over her entire career on the show.

I don't think that having a degree as a nurse makes you particularly qualified to play one as an actor. May be quite the opposite in fact. As a practicing nurse would you be a good enough actor to spout ridiculous lines or portray a nurse in some of the ridiculous situations that on screen nurses are placed in?

I have no interest in acting as a career, but if I did I doubt I could play a nurse with a straight face. Unfortunately due to my very un-model like body that career was never an option to be considered either.

House of Cards had a nurse casting call not too long ago. September I think? They gave zero notice, though. Just gotta keep your ears open.

Dang, I would have jumped on that opportunity!

Modeling would work only if you look like a model and would be able to do other catalog work too. When I look at scrub catalogs, I only look at the way the clothes hang, pockets, colors, ect. I dont think "is she a real nurse?" I don't see the advantages to having a real nurse in a show or tv as an actor, but on set as a writer or an advisor, yes. Really, it is a superficial world so real nurses or not, they want the "beautiful people".

I was on Chicago Fire. Chicago Med also casts real nurses/other medical professionals. Know that you only get paid about a 1/3 of what you make as a nurse but for the experience and just for the pure fun of it, it's totally worth it.
