** Need Advice** Start New Job on Monday..Just offered another position

    Hello,

    Here is my delimma. I start orientation on Monday for a new position within a hospital. I will be working in a Transplant Unit. Today I just received a call offering me a position at another hospital for a med surg position. I really don't want to burn any bridges and tell the hospital that I changed my mind and not start orientation on Monday. I feel as if I don't start the transplant unit job I could possibly be put on a do not rehire list. I really like the hospital and everyone there seemed so nice. Also, everyone is saying that I will really learn a lot in a Transplant Unit. I am a new grad and I don't know what to do so early in my career. As of right now I would love to work in the emergency room and possibly ICU.

    Hospital # 1 which starts on Monday:
    0.5 part time day shift (could possibly get extra shifts)
    transplant unit
    20 minutes from my house by car
    Landed job on my own without any connections
    Don't know exactly what benefits I am eligible for

    Hospital # 2 which starts in February:
    full time nights
    med surg unit
    pays around the same as hospital #1
    5 minutes from my house by car
    Landed through a connection (my connection doesn't care if I don't accept this job since I already accepted another offer)
    Full benefits

    ** I have until the end of the week to inform hospital #2 of my decision**

    What would you guys do? Is a transplant unit hard to get into as a new grad? I guess my real question is what unit would you take?

    Well, this depends on a lot of things. Do you need full time pay and full time benefits? Do you have a preference for either of these specialties? Personally, I would choose transplant over med-surg but taking everything into consideration if I were a new grad, I'd take the full-time, full benefits option. I'm curious as to why hospital 1 didn't tell you what benefits you were eligible for when they offered you the job though... I have never accepted a job without first confirming the benefits.

    Job 1. I am sure you will be able to pick up more hours later. Also, the experience will be much more intense than medsurg.

    Sorry, I left out some info. When I interviewed I was given an info sheet outlining their benefits but it was for fulltime employees. I just contacted the benefits department and I would get benefits. I just have to pay for my medical. If I were fulltime there would be no cost. I can join the pension, get vacation and holiday, etc..

    You don't have to worry about burned bridges with job #2 since you haven't accepted it, but you might with job #1 since you have accepted it. I'm sure you realize people accept jobs and decline them all the time, you wouldn't be the first person to do that. But you seem to have a good work ethic, and this is what happens when we apply to several jobs at the same time.

    Sounds like you want job #1 more. If benefits and travel time aren't a factor, I think you should go for it Sundrop!

    I would choose job number 2. Alot of ED and ICU units want medsurg experience.

    Job #1 shouldn't fault you for backing out in favor of a full time job. Which do you prefer? Do you need ft salary? Do not going on being able to pick up extra time at job #1: even if its available now it might not be when you need it.
