Nurses Professionalism

Published

:nurse: I work in a small rural hospital in Nebraska, you would think the nurses here would be as professional as anywhere,or more so,wrong-wrong-wrong...we have some younger 22-30 year olds that use the f word and others I don't care to think of,at the drop of their hat..they nit-pick and make fun of others all the time...our unit manager is well aware of the problem and I think she may have had a few words with them but their behavior has not changed...does anyone out their have a solution???

In my nurses training we were taught that 1. NEVER talk about another nurse or MD

2.NEVER use foul language 3. your appearence is very important.....come on ladies this is not a hard list to follow,is it? Thanks for listening

Well we have the same problems with nurses talking about each other, but it definatley isn't just the YOUNGER nurses doing it... Backstabbing runs wild on my floor... It is one of the main reasons I'm beginning to hate my job..

that's why i suk as a 'business person'.

i am no-nonsense and would have a zero tolerance policy on workplace negativity.

if these people didn't respond to the progressive discipline policies, they would be out of there. period.

but you are going to find this in more place than not. if they don't act like that in front of pts/families, then nothing much can be done unless you care to have a private conversation with them, telling them they're disgraceful.

yes, i have done that. if mgmt. seems dismissive, then unfortunately, you're on your own.....

I several older nurses who swear like sailors and sometimes it slips out in front of the patient. However, these women are also some of the BEST nurses ever.

Back stabbing is rampant -- all it takes is one person who starts it. Then no one feels safe and it takes a very emotionally mature (or very determined) person to avoid participating.

Specializes in NICU, PICU, educator.

I didn't really swear until I became a nurse LOL I am very careful about what I say, but sometimes it just slips out! and I am no spring chicken LOL

As for the talking about others...unfortunately it comes with the territory.

I have heard a veteran nurse telling me she couldn't believe how bad nurses cuss !

I swear as a way of venting stress, anger and frustration, as I'm sure some others do as well. When you look at it like that, I'm amazed there are nurses that don't swear.

Swearing is a great stress reliever. Nurses are regular people not angles. That said, on the job, cursing is not ok.

Some of the nurses use the f-word when describing their day or their assignment. I have never heard any use this language in front of a patient or family. I really don't care if they do- but I don't. Usually I think they are just blowing off some steam. I think the more people cuss the easier it is to let it slip out. So they should be careful.

Foul language in front of pts/families is not a nitpicking complaint. Respect of your pts and their families is most important. A nurse can be sharp as a tack, but if she verbally comes off like a street walker, then she doesn't leave a very good impression.

Making fun of others, well, that is simply immaturity and has nothing to do with age. It's not just in nursing either, it's running rampant all over this country in all walks of life.

No solution to offer unfortunately.
