Racism at Oakland University?

Nurses Activism

Published

In Dean Catherine Vincent's pediatric pathophysiology course, all of her white middle-class students did exceptionally well but a Mexican-American student in her class failed miserably. What was the reason for the minority student's failure? Could it be mere coincidence? It would not be the first time in history that a teacher handed out grades according to his/her racist beliefs. "Studies have reported faculty bias toward minority students in grading papers, judging clinical performance, and assessing written examinations" (Villarruel, Canales, & Torres, 2001). "Nurse educators need to acknowledge that, with a few exceptions, racism is endemic in our programs" (Barbee & Gibson, 2001).

What can be done when the faculty at Oakland University sides with Dean Vincent? Isn't it convenient that her exams are graded by hand affording her the opportunity to grade exams in any manner she pleases including racist ones?

Whites make up 86% of the registered nurse population. Despite the dramatic increase of Hispanics in the U.S., there has been no significant increase in the number of Hispanic nurses. I wonder what's keeping Hispanics out of nursing?

As another Black woman, you sound like you have a problem with anyone offering a different point of view.

I had to go back and read my original post in order to figure out what caused this reaction from you. I suppose, it was the part about "knowing better". It's unfortunate, I can come off as strong sometimes but the bottom line is that I have no prob with anyone having a difference of opinion, that is what makes things interesting.

Being a Black woman, I didn't see Renee's post as being patronizing.

That's cool, because that is where a difference of opinion comes from. And besides I agreed with many of Renee's points, just not the parts that perhaps Manuel is somehow at fault for his life's experiences(I'm paraphrasing).

But, maybe some of us come from the "old school" and don't blame "Whitey" for every thing wrong that comes our way. Maybe some of us have learned to rise above race issues and excel despite anything that comes our way. Maybe some of us have stopped being victims and act as proud SURVIVORS.

Gosh, where did that come from? Did I give the impression that I blame "Whitey" for everything? Nothing could be farther from the truth. I am a strong believer in personal responsibility and living one's life on one's own terms. Personally my life experiences have been nothing like Manuel's(with the exception of a few incidents) but that doesn't mean I don't recognize that perhaps others have had a different experience from mine. I'm just not prepared to dismiss his feelings as being in his head(which is what I got from Renee's post).

MAYBE some of us ARE high achievers and need to hear that just because we are minorities we do not have to strive for perfection ALL the time - we can be human TOO. Being a HUMAN, you should know better.

There is no MAYBE about it. MANY of us ARE high achievers and we are HUMAN. I'm sorry that we can't discuss this issue and have a difference of opinion without becoming upset.

I'd like to have lunch with you too Heather. :o :kiss

I'm from Ohio...haven't been home in a long time, but hope to be one day again soon. It's a great state to live in - of course that would be a prejudice opinion being that I was born, raised, and educated there. ;) :p

I just find it hard to believe that this thread is still alive.

Unfortunately this thread will be alive long after we are both gone.

Racism is in perpetual motion, fueling its own backward motion even when it seems to be going forward.

Does it exist at Okland U.?................It does, even if it's just in one person.

Racism doesn't need two people to exist, but it often does, but only because it can exist in only one person.

Uhmmm............Did I make a point?

Peeps,

I have to agree with you on the point if racism affects even one person than it does indeed exist.

and Heather and all...

I'll buy the first round if any of us ever get together.

Lunch sounds like fun!

Russell, I'd love to braid that hair of yours. I love long hair on men. So, if we all get together, will you let me brush and braid your hair?

Manuel...please feel free to let me know if I said anything condescending to you here. We all have a way of wording things, and obviously Sharon thinks that the way I worded my comments to you was "patronizing" -- which is far from the truth. I will only respond to you Manuel, so please don't hesitate to ask me anything you want. I don't bite...not much anyway. :chuckle ;) :kiss
