A "must-read" article...RETROGRESSION UPDATE

I got this article from PinoyRN...

for more information....just click the link...
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:H.R.1001.IH:

A bill has been filed in the U.S. Congress seeking to create a special non-immigrant visa category for filipino nurses and other foreign registered nurses.

The proposed legislation dubbed, "The Nursing Relief Act of 2009" (H.R. 1001), will create a temporary W Visa category for registered nurses. It will work in a very similar way as the H-1B visa except that the category is exclusive to registered nurses.

The proposed W Visa cateogory will have a yearly numerical limit of 50,000. However, the cap may be increased depending on the demand for foreign nurses. A W Visa will be valid for three (3) years at a time.

That's too much like outsourcing for me! I sure hope it doesn't pass..... I'll write my representatives in Congress, will you, too?

Let's write our representatives and stop this- many US nurses cannot find jobs- we do not need to "insource" nurses!

Conditions have changed in healthcare 360 degress in SW USA: Arizona, and Califonia have hiring frezzes and current new grads unable to gain first position....areas mentioned in bill. Same thing is happening in NJ, PA, FL, Mass and MI.

This bill is dead in the water and won't make it out of committee.

After I read this I googled it to try and find out more info on it. I found where it was brought up before President Obama and he said there was absolutely no reason for us to be bringing in foreign nurses. He said we should be spending money on increasing the amount of nurses we can train ourselves. He also addressed the low pay issues for both nurses and educators. It is nice to actually hear something intelligent come out of Washington.

Here's a thought - How about Congress pass an "American Graduate Nurses Unable To Get A Job Relief Act of 2009"!!

I am a new college graduate and passed the NCLEX-RN exam more than a month ago. I’m an American Citizen with social security and driver’s license. I just wonder why some healthcare/political institution kept claiming that United States have shortage of nurses but until now I couldn’t find a job as new Registered Nurse. I’ve been applying online and submitted my hard copied resumes to Washington Hospital Center, Inova, Prince George’s Hospital Center, SHW-UMC/Capitol/Hadley/Greater Southeast, Southern Maryland Hospital but It’s been a month and I haven’t got any phone call/email from these hospitals I applied to. I browsed through the internet nurses forum- allnurses.com and did find out that I’m not the only American new Registered Nurse who has this kind of problem. Is the shortage real and/or It’s because of our current economic status or cheaper laborers for hospital owners?
