HEY GOP: Attacking Hillary Isn't a Health Plan

Nurses Activism

when even [http://www.amconmag.com/2007/2007_10_22/cover.html a magazine called "the american conservative" counsels] the republican presidential candidates that they can't live on hillary-hate alone, something is happening.

as nurses fighting for guaranteed healthcare, the california nurses association/national nurses organizing committee tracks this trend in terms of health policy. [http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rose-ann-demoro/memo-to-the-gop-stopping_b_69472.html i will let our executive director rose ann demoro sum it up: attacking hillary clinton is not a health plan.] you can click through to the full article, but here's a taste:

apparently taking their leadership from karl rove who warned that the republican candidates must focus on healthcare because the issue is "on the mind of a lot of swing voters," the republican candidates for president have now latched on to healthcare.

but in the true spirit of their mentor rove, it appears they think our biggest healthcare crisis is the potential election of hillary clinton.

hearing their fulminations about "socialized medicine" and "hillary care" almost makes you wonder what they've been drinking.

in a new report, george lakoff's rockridge institute aptly describes the approach of clinton and the other top tier democrats as the "neoliberal mode of thought" in its dubious reliance on regulation and technocratic changes to an industry that needs to be dismantled, not tweaked.

but at least clinton and company are talking about comprehensive reform. the republican candidates' healthcare policies recall the words attributed, probably erroneously, to marie antoinette whose infamous solution to mass shortages of bread was "let them eat cake."

...cross-posted at the [http://www.guaranteedhealthcare.org/blog national nurses organizing committee/california nurses association's] breakroom blog, as we organize to make 2007 the year of guaranteed healthcare on the single-payer model.

No one is talking about no Democrats being in the military as usual so much reading into every statement and not looking at the actual statements I was responding. What blatant hateful comments???? Are you not being judgemental??? You don't kow my circumstances in life or how hard I have to work to get where I am. I have a great life right now because I worked hard in life to get where I am. No one ever gave me any handouts I earned everything I have and I don't think it's too much to ask some of those in the wagon to get out and help the rest of us pull it.
Ive pulled that wagon for over thirty years, sometimes the wagon tips over and breaks and can no longer be pulled, and ALL the good planning for any eventuality cannot face up to what LIFE sometimes has in store for even the HARDEST most deserving of workers.

Your statement about no democrats in the military is amazing. My daughter is in the Navy and is now and ALWAYS has been a liberal democrat as are ALL of my children. We are trying to figure out how I can become her dependant so I can get some of the medical care I desperatly need. The free clinic cannot provide this type of care due to cost constraints. Your blatent , hateful comments about how easy it is to just change jobs, lazy people needing help, etc, etc. makes me just shake my head. I wonder just what your bedside manner must be when you take care of someone who you consider unworthy. It is funny how life has a way of teaching some folks, who are a bit too smug, humility. Its a huge mistake to think that you are immune to unexpected "stuff", that you are so well prepared, for ANY eventuality. Have a good life, hopefully.......

As a proud Navy Veteran I can be counted as a proud liberal. One of the reasons that I am such a strong believer in single payer is my experience as to how well Tricare functions in providing health care to service members and dependents. If we can design a high performing system for the military, VA and federal employees than we can design a system to bring the un and underinsured into the system.

Denigrating the poor and working poor does little to address the root causes of poverty. Denigration of the poor reflects very poorly on the incorporation of core nursing values into the psyche and behaviors associated with professional practice.

No handouts?

You received help from taxpayers from the moment you were born.

Someone paid taxes to build the roads, build and staff the public schools, paid insurance premiums to help defer the cost of your birth and spread the cost across a larger group, paid taxes to build and staff the hospital, if you used Montgomery GI Bill for school taxpayers paid the matching share to your contributions, taxpayers subsidize the cost of college to reduce the tuition you paid, taxpayers subsidize the cost of your student loans, if you ever collected a grant that is a gift, Perkins nursing loans are essentially gifts.....Your service in the military is appreciated but the myth of the self made man in America is just that a myth. The economic, social and cultural environment established by taxpayers working together through government is what leads to individuals achieving success through their efforts within that environment.

Not everyone who needs SSDI or SSI is a deadbeat, those who are a bit too judgemental are tempting fate to teach them humility and compassion.

Great statement it is in my signature line for the time being........
