RN needs work in VA w/ disciplinary action

Nurses Recovery

Published

Hi everyone. Im a RN trying to find employment in Virginia. I have a reprimand on my license after it was suspended briefly due to investigation. (I was in the Florida IPN for 5 years. Virginia is my home state. Once I returned to VA, the BON did an investigation as to the status that should be taken on my VA license....they FULLY REINSTATED MY LICENSE, WITH A MULTISTATE COMPACT PRIVILEGE, NO RESTRICTIONS, ...but did reprimand me).

After the hearing, the VA BON members (the investigators, etc) told me they had NEVER seen a license totally reinstated like mine was!! I was so relieved.

NOW>>> I cant get a job. Everyone wants to hire me, but when I disclose the info about the discipline, they promptly look it up, and I guess see that its "recent", and decline to go further w/ the interview process.

I have tried everywhere. I DID get ONE staffing agency to hire me. The problem is that every time I go to work, at lets say a long term care facility, they want to hire me there...but that is before they find out about the discipline.

I am in the VA beach area, but would accept any employment state wide.

Does anyone have any pointers or suggestions?

Im already blackballed from the Bon Secours facilities...d/t the discipline.

Its like they dont even take the time to hear me out or let me explain. And every application these days asks you up front if you have ever had disciplinary action taken.

What do I do?????

I don't understand how they can "see" this previous issue? I'm in Indiana and when you look up a nurse license it just says "Active" or "Inactive".. How if it is active they see previous issues?

Dialysis is a safe restart...and its true "F" is very friendly to nurses with hx of addictions! I am thankful for them and their open hearts, allowing mr a new beginning with my career!

Hey all, I will be allowed to look for work soon, I am about 4 months in hpmp since orientation.. Just want to be reasonable when I look for work.. The lady at the lab I go to for the randoms loves to remind me everytime no one will want to hire me since they have to do paperwork on me every month and stipulations so it has gotten me pretty down. I'm thankful to be in the program but she makes it seem like it's for nothing. My councilors assure me I will find work in nursing though so I keep my head up.. Any suggestions on settings that are hpmp friendly? I am in the chesterfield va area. Hope every one is doing great on their recovery!

Please don't listen to the lady who works in the lab, she doesn't know what she's talking about. It may take longer, but we can find work. Despite your past, you have good things to offer as a nurse, and you will be an asset to whoever hires you. Don't ever let anyone make you forget that.

That really means a lot.. Thank you for brightening this tough time! I sure do hope I'll have some good news soon

You will find a job, I've been a member of this site since November and everything goes in waves, or so it seems. One common theme? Nurses come here afraid, insecure, frustrated, are about to lose all hope and then BAM! They get a job. Remember, no one would invest in these programs if they didn't work. Our fears are much worse than reality. I get to talk to a lot of nurses in aa, some who got caught, some who didn't. Remember you are not alone in this. As much as I hate being an addict I now belong to a club of sorts and have more love and support than I could ever have dreamed of. All my love from Alaska!

Thank you!! I really appreciate the support!!

What the hell would the lab lady know anyway? She's probably jealous because you're an RN and she, well, works in a lab... It's been a while since we spoke hope things are going well. I got a job in dec at a dialysis clinic. Not exactly critical care or trauma like I used to work but hey, baby steps right? Dialysis is extremely addiction friendly (no narcs on premises) and I have found that Fresenius has been very HPMP friendly. Your worksite monitor will have to fill out a single page "report" on you monthly. It takes my boss about 90secs, it's really no big deal. Mostly checking boxes. Don't listen to the lab lady she really has no place commenting on HPMP or your prospects of obtaining employment.

What is HPMP?

thx

I had minor stipulations in Texas 2004-2006. The offense was a possession charge in Jan 2001. I went before the Board in Feb 2003. It was not job related, I have no criminal record, had no restrictions passing narcotics or working nights. I did not have to do the TPAPN or diversionary program. They were aware it was not mine, but it was in my vehicle. I've never flunked a drug test. I transferred the stipulations about halfway through to New Mexico. I can't tell you how many jobs I have been passed over for or had the job offer rescinded. I had no criminal record before or since. It is the Risk Mgmt or legal departments of hospital corporations that advise against those of us who have had a mistake in our lives. You screw up once and your essentially phucked. Anyone else have any ideas for rectifying this or know of a friendly HR dept?
